Screen recording not identifying and creating text entry fields

May 25, 2022

HI ! Hoping someone can assist me!

I am new to Storyline 360, and have never worked with any software for building of training materials, so apologies if I am missing something obvious.

I have recorded my screen and loaded it into storyline under 'try mode' as step by step slides. The 'clicks' have transferred perfectly, however when it comes to text entry fields, this is not registering at all, and the text I have entered in the screen recording already populated, not allowing the user to do the data entry themselves.

Having read some previous discussion threads I have tried to see if it is because of a previously mentioned bug leading to the data entry icon to be difficult to find, but I don't think it is this.

I have also tried using a different browser (have tried it in edge and chrome) but neither of these have solved the issue.

How can I resolve this, or is there a known (and preferably easy to use!), workaround)

Many thanks

Hi Megan,

I did a quick test on my end to see if Storyline 360 will be able to detect and record the text that I enter during a screen recording, and I can confirm that it did. While recording my screen, I typed in the text that you can see in the screenshot, and doing so generated a text entry question slide in my sample course.

I've attached my demo file to this response for your reference. I'd like to ask a few questions to help clarify your experience:

  • Is this issue happening when you are recording actions being done on a specific application?
  • When making a screen recording on you typing in text on an application like Notepad, does the text entry get detected?

If Storyline 360 does not detect typing in text when recording an application like Notepad, try doing a repair of your Storyline 360 installation to see if this helps. If the issue persists, you can reach out to our support team so they can take a closer look at what's happening.

Hi Megan,

If Storyline 360 is unable to recognize keystrokes entered specifically in the application that you are trying to record, then there must be some administrative restrictions in place that is causing the behavior. To troubleshoot further, you can try doing the following:

  • Run Storyline 360 as an administrator
  • Reach out to your IT staff to see if both Storyline 360 and the application that you are trying to record have the same set of permissions

Testing using the process of elimination is always helpful in determining the root cause, so in your case, I'd recommend trying to record other applications as well. This should give you an idea on which applications can be recorded or not.
