Seek bar does not sync up to inserted media in preview

Feb 18, 2020

Hi all, bit of an odd one here, but it has happened a few times now and I cannot figure out why.

There are 3 elements on a slide:

  1. Title - text box
  2. A video mask - a transparent box to stop users clicking the video
  3. An mp4 file @ 01:23 in length

I have adjusted the seekbar to ~ 84s in length.

If I preview using the timeline (press play) the tracking syncs correctly and it sends at the correct time. If I preview the slide (Ctrl + F12), then the media always finishes with about a third of the timeline remaining and the timeline continues to progress.

If I skip to anywhere in the timeline however, it syncs up correctly.

I'm afraid I cannot share any of the course content due to company policy.
It's like there is a lag when playing as intended. Any ideas?

Thanks for your reply Lauren. I've checked the timeline on each media slide, along with the master slide and there is nothing that suggests the timeline would pause. The only option I am considering is that the timeline would "add" the layer's timeline to the main one? For example, we use a layer called "Next" with around a 5 second timeline, to show a "Click to continue" prompt.

Hi Lauren, really appreciate the time you've taken to investigate this and produce the personalised video! Unfortunately this is not exactly the issue I am facing, but I can identify it in your recording.

  • The video clip you are using is ~16 seconds long.
  • The timeline is the same length.
  • When you preview your slide (1:13), the seekbar reaches around 75% (see image) before showing the layer (1:25).

The issue is that while the video and timeline are exactly the same length, the seekbar reaches 75% before the media completes. This suggest that the seekbar is not in sync with the timeline. Interestingly, if you were to scrub the seekbar, the media would sync up correctly.

In my course, this layer is a transparent instructional overlay, so from the users perspective, they see the end of the video, a still moving timeline (~25% of the length of the media) and an instruction to move on.

EDIT: Just wanted to add that this does not happen once published. Seems to purely be a preview bug. So no fix needed, just maybe worth flagging.

Hi Ben,

Thank you for sharing those additional details!

I am glad to hear that you do not see this when the course is published. I ran through this as well and created a similar sample course. However, I could only see the seekbar not synching up exactly when the timeline was longer than the duration of the video.

I also made a quick video to show the behavior I see here

Hi Vincent, I understand what you're saying and am pretty clear with this concept. I suspect this is very specific to our setup, and probably doesn't need a fix. Just more of an FYI to the development team.

The only difference seems to be that we are using a customised, classic player, skin with menu items on the right.

I've checked for layers, states, slide and feedback masters, but found nothing to cause this glitch. It also doesn't happen on the standard classic player when I tried to recreate it.

I've taken some screenshots to demonstrate further what is happening for me:

  1. Video length
  2. Timeline length (MP4 highlighted in blue and starts at timeline 00:00
  3. Where the position of the seekbar is when the media has completed

I tested this with my phone stopwatch. The video stops correctly at the 27 second mark and the seekbar continues until ~34 seconds. There is an added 7 seconds of seekbar that is coming from an unknown source.

As I say, it isn't causing a problem, so happy to just chalk it up to a weird glitch and leave it there.

Thanks for your help.
