If possible, you might consider sharing your .story file with the forum using the Add Attachment feature of the forum's Post composer so the forum's members might offer some insight
here is a quick video of adding a shape and a button to a slide and adding a selected state. There are no triggers. You can also highlight both the objects and create a button state so that when one object is selected, the other object if already selected would be deselected.
Hope that helps or as the guys said above, if you have a file started it's easier to work with your specific setup.
