Sending Question Attempt Data from Storyline 360 to LMS

Jan 10, 2020

Hi All,

I am creating a game using Storyline 360 that contains a series of questions users must answer correctly to move through the game. the first time they see the question, the user has up to two attempts to answer the question correctly. After the first attempt they see a screen with a little feedback and asked to try again. There is a navigation button on this slide that takes the user back to the question to try again. After the second attempt the user is taken to a slide to review some content within the game before they can try to answer the question again. There is a button on this content slide that takes the user to a new slide with the same question and the user is given two more attempts to answer the question. Users need to successfully answer a question before they can move on to the next question.

We would like to track both the number of attempts users take to answer the question, along with their answer selections (both right and wrong). I have a "report interactions" button on each question, but I don't know if this will send the data we are looking for back to the LMS. If data is only reported when a user goes to a "report results" slide, it might not work if the goal is masterly learning of the item, where users might need to take the item multiple times and we want to know the results of each attempt.

The game works well when it is just running on the web, but that's not giving us the back end data we need. Any thoughts or help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Ron

Hi Lauren,

Thanks for the note and the quick reply. What we are looking for is data at a much finer grain size. We are working on a research project for NSF focused on the creation of microlearning modules and we want to track the number of attempts and answers at the question level, not at the quiz or course level. It's not clear if Storyline reports this level of information out to the LMS. Does it report only when there is a "submit result" slide?

On top of that, we are changing LMS providers in the next couple of months, and have no one with enough expertise to let us know what reports the LMS will produce. Does Storyline send data to the LMS at the slide level? For example, can we tell how much time users spend on individual slides?

Thanks,

Ron

Hi Ron!

The number of attempts is not data passed from Storyline to an LMS, but you can track how long a user spends on a slide.

Here's the information passed from Storyline to an LMS:

  • id: Storyline sends a series of data for this string to identify the Scene#, the QuestionDraw# (if applicable), and the Slide# in that particular scene or question draw.
  • type: This is the type of question (True/False, Multiple Choice, Multiple Response, etc).
  • student_response: This is how the learner answered the question.
  • correct_response: This is the correct answer for the question.
  • result: This designates whether the learner answered the question correctly or not.
  • weighting: Articulate content doesn't currently utilize this item. It'll always be set to 1.
  • latency: This is how long it took the learner to answer the question.
  • objective: Articulate content doesn't currently utilize this item. It'll always be set to 0.
