Sequential Quiz
Jun 26, 2017
Hi
I have a game in one of my courses, where a character jumps along 27 spots (after rolling a dice to decide how far each time) in order to reach the end:
I have a question bank of about 15 x questions, and 27 x Draw from Question Bank slides so that when the character lands on any spot, a random question is asked of them before they can continue.
My first issue arose when people said that they were often asked the same question more than once during the game, due to random questions allowing for the fact you could theoretically get the same question 5 times in a row!
A suggestion was made to make the questions sequential, so the user would get at least 15 rolls of the dice before seeing a repeated question.
Here are my questions:
1 - How do I make my Draw from Quiz slides sequential, is it "just" untick "Draw questions randomly" from each Draw slide, or do I need to do anything else like "include in shuffle" or "locking questions."
2 - If I make them sequential, what will happen if they get to question 15, will it automatically go back to question 1 after? Or do I have to set up an instruction to loop back to the start somewhere?
Sorry for all the detail but was trying to be clear!
Thanks in advance!

Hi Thomas,
No need to apologize--those details were really helpful! I do have a couple more questions:
We found an issue in the HTML5 output (and in Preview) where the same questions will be drawn when revisiting a question draw slide.
I'd love to have a look at your .story file to see if it matches those circumstances, or if we can identify what else is happening! You can use Add Attachment to share it here.
Hi Alyssa
I am using Articulate 360. Yes each spot links to a seperate draw slide.
Attached is the file in the hope you can help me convert it to a sequential quiz which just loops if it gets to the end of the bank of questions.
Thanks
Hi there Thomas,
I've got your file open, and I'm looking at "Scene 8: Game Board". I'm not seeing where the game board triggers a question draw. Can you point me in the right direction?
Hi Alyssa
If you go to slide 8.2 you'll see in the slide layers, "die-numbers" which refer to what happens on each dice roll. Choose any (1-6) to see the links to all the question draws.
Kind regards
Ah, thank you! Since you're visiting a different slide draw each time, it doesn't appear that the issue I mentioned in my earlier post is happening in your file.
There could be multiple ways to convert your game to a sequential quiz, and I invite the community to share their ideas with you. In the meantime, my first thought is to draw from the same question draw slide each time, and remove the option to "Draw Questions Randomly".
Since all of the layers on slide 8.2 are similar (with exception to the PiecePosition variable trigger), I would change all of the "Draw from Question Bank" triggers on the first layer, then duplicate that layer for the other five layers.
Hi Alyssa
I have done all of the above and have now run in to a new issue!
Now when it grabs a question, it only grabs the first one, and asks that over and over. I can't seem to get it to move to question 2 on the next roll.
Can you help?
Thanks
HI Alyssa
I have a strong feeling it is the HTML5 issue with publishing and previewing you discussed earlier.
Can I assume this is a bug?
Do you have a fix?
Kind regards
Hi Thomas,
You're right--now you're running into that bug I mentioned earlier.
To get around it, I made a few changes to your file. I added a question draw slide for every question (15 slide draws in all), and I included only one question in each draw.
It seems to work well in HTML5--take a peek at the published version here.
I have attached the updated file. Let me know if that will work for you!
Good morning Alyssa
Well I don't know what to say really. Thank you so much. I know this has probably been a thorn in your side but the amount of help you gave me is really appreciated.
I'll run the test now.
Thanks again.
I'm glad we could put our heads together to make it work! I could tell you spent so much time on the design, I was determined to find a workaround for you. ☺️
Let me know if you run into any issues during your testing!
