SL2 - Using Motion Path to Make Your Character Jump

Sep 25, 2014

Hi Everyone,

Took me a while to figure this one out, so thought I'd share. I wanted my character to jump on the spot periodically throughout the slide - steps I needed to take were.

1. First I needed to turn off snap to grid (under view -> show - after expanding the options). Otherwise the fine movements of the motion paths required isn't achievable.

2. Add an up (straight up) line motion path for the character with options:

   - End Point = how high you want your character to jump (do not move the start point)

   - Duration = 1 sec (or more/less depending on how high you're making the character jump).

   - Path option -> Easing Speed = Medium and Direction = Out

   - Path option -> click on Relative Start Point

3. Add a down (straight down) line motion path for the character with options:

   - End Point = the same distance down as you made the up line motion (again do not move the start point)

   - Duration = 1 sec (same as the up, or more/less depending on how high you're making the character jump).

   - Path option -> Easing Speed = Medium and Direction = In

   - Path option -> click on Relative Start Point

4. Edit the trigger for the second (down) move and change it to When animation Line Motion 1 (the up) ends.

5. You can then edit the timing of the first move trigger if you don't want your character to jump when the timeline starts.

6. Finally, you can add as many 'up' (Line Motion 1) triggers as you like, be they timeline triggered or other action triggered, and they will always be followed by the down trigger, making your character appear to jump.

Hope my steps are clear enough.

Cheers,

Dougal.
