Software Simulation Hotspot Trigger Duplication

Jul 08, 2013

We are wondering why, when using Hotspots in a software simulation, that Storyline adds two (2) "Jump to next slide" triggers. It's also curious that when we try to delete one of these triggers, they both go away.

Can you please give us some background and also suggest what may be a better way to deal with these Hotspots?

Thanks!

Welcome to E-Learning Heroes, Rick!

There are a few objects that automatically generate triggers, hotspots are one of these objects. You are not, however, required to use those triggers if you don't need them. Storyline sees a hotspot as an object that's going to be interacted with, so it generates a trigger for it.

If you would like to use the hotspot for something other than the default trigger, you don't need to delete the default trigger that's inserted. Simply double-click on the trigger and change the controls and/or conditions for the hotspot.

Typically, however, hotspots will create a "Show Layer" trigger - not a "Jump to next slide" trigger. So, I'm a little curious why that's happening in your project. Doesn't really sound like expected behavior.

If you create a new, blank Storyline file, does the same thing happen when you insert a hotspot?

Also, can you tell me what version you're running please? First, can you tell me what version of Storyline you're using, please? To find this information, click on "Help" and "About Articulate Storyline".

If you're not running version 3 (1305.2012), please download and install the update using the link below:

Articulate - Storyline Update 3

Thanks and welcome again, Rick!

Christine:

Your reply is very much appreciated.

I will test Storyline by adding a Hotspot to a new story and let you know what I find.

Regarding the version of Storyline, we are currently using Update 2: 1212.1412.  Regrettably, our IT department has yet to update to Update 3. Is it your thinking that this would cause our problem?

Hi there Rick,

The "Jump to" trigger that you're seeing is actually a player trigger and is created when a slide is created. The "Show layer" trigger that's shown is the normal, default trigger that's created when a hotspot is added to a slide.

So, it looks like everything's working as designed, unless I'm missing something. Are you saying it's adding both triggers? Was the "Jump to" trigger removed before adding the hotspot? If so, that might be why it's showing up after words.

Thanks!
