Starting course on different scenes

Jun 15, 2023

Hello, I have a course that has 14 different scenes each covering a different stage of a larger process. I'd like to keep the course together as is so that someone can take a training on the process from start to finish but I was also wondering if there would be a way to link directly to a scene so that if a user just wanted to learn about one step in the process they could go directly to that scene. So we'd have one link that would take you to the start of the full course but then multiple links that would take you just to the scene for a specific step. So far I think my only option is to keep the larger storyline file but then also break out each scene into it's own file. I thought I'd inquire if anyone has any ideas on this!

Why not provide a custom menu at the start of the course that allows someone to start the whole process or jump to any given scene? Are you concerned about tracking what each person sees?

If you break each scene into a separate file, then you'll have multiple files to update. FYI: You can publish just a single scene:

The caveat with that approach: Each scene needs to be able to stand on it's own. For example, each scene should start with a title slide. And the text shouldn't reference other scenes (e.g., no "As you saw in the previous step...").

I have a similar question … i was wondering if I could use a variable to change the starting scene. Is this a possibility?

I want to build one “game” but need to intersperse content that is being served from within an LMS (D2L). The main content will live as content pages within the LMS but the interactivity will be built in storyline and embedded in the content page where needed. The main content needs to reside in the LMS so that the SME can modify, edit and expand on the content without needing a copy of storyline. If not I can break up the game into individual projects, it would just be so much more elegant if I could find a different solution that would allow for the whole game to run or it’s individual parts.

thanks, Jen

Hello Jen!

Are you looking for the main content to impact where the learner starts within the interactive course created in Storyline 360? If so, that sounds like a build that would include Javascript! Javascript is not my area of expertise but we have so many community members who are pros with Javascript, so I hope they'll jump in.

If you're looking for the learner to control where they start within the interactive course, then I would recommend creating the first slide to include a menu that would allow the user to start where you'd like them to start.

Please let me know if I'm off base with what you're interested in building!
