Story file isn't working correctly because of video files in it

Aug 19, 2014

Hey, I was wondering if any of you shared the same experience as I did today, where the story file went crazy(buttons move, animation repeats continuously, pictures disappear while hovering and more) every time I try to add the movies to the file and publish/preview.

I have to say that when I take off the movies from the project file it fixes the problem.

what could be the reason? could it be the size of the story file? could it be the size of the movie?

the movies I try to add are mp4, and there are 8 of them (summing of to 75 mega).

Any ideas on how I should solve this problem?

Thanks,

Maytal.

Hi Maytal,

I'm sorry to hear about the odd behavior with your movies when added into Storyline. I would first want to check that you're able to look into if you're following along with these guidelines for working on your Storyline files:

You mentioned the overall size of the video files, but what about the .story file itself prior to adding the videos? Have you tested working on your file with all other programs and applications shut down to help determine if it's a memory issue? The minimum system requirements for Storyline are detailed here.

Please let me know how it's behaving after checking into those elements.

Hey Ashley and thanks for the quick answer.

Unfortunately none of the guidelines helped.

It works fine as long as I add 2/4 videos (mp4), adding the 3rd or the 4th make the storyline file "go crazy" ....(on preview/publish).

The storyline file weighs 107 mega, the videos weigh about 96 mega (all 8 of them together).

Another possible option for this mess could be that I work on two different computers (same project) with two different updates of storyline (one was update 3 and the other update 4). Do you think it could ruin a storyline project like that?

When I open a new storyline project and add just the videos (all of them) it seems to work fine.... - though it means I need to start the project all over again, hoping it will not get corrupted on the way.

What would you suggest?

Any video bugs have been fixed on the update 6?

Thanks,

Maytal

Hi Maytal,

There have been a number of bug fixes since update 3 and 4, and they're all detailed here. I'd suggest updating to the most recent update of Storyline, as there could be an underlying fix/issue with something else you have set up. Working between computers and versions may also be contributing to some odd behavior, and I'd want to know more about how you're sharing the file between computers? Are you following along with the workflow here for collaborating on files?

You could also try importing the entire contents of your current file into a new file as described here. If there is corruption associated with the file, that can sometimes help resolve it.

Feel free to let us know if you're able to check into those areas!

Hey Ashley!
I've tried all the options you mentioned -

The only thing that actually worked was creating a new storyline file - adding all the media - and after this worked copying all the other pages.

Something weird that I came across while doing the progress....: whenever I copied video slides and just replace the movie needed - it ruined my project.

If I deleted the slide and added a new blank one (adding the video myself all over again) - it worked just fine.

Are you familiar with this problem?

am I using the tool wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Maytal.

Hi Maytal,

Thanks for updating us on what occurred. I'd always recommend importing the files into a new project as described here as opposed to copy and pasting, as it seems that has lost information or elements in the past and cause issues. Was this behavior occurring after updating to Storyline Update 6 or still within Update 3 and 4?
