Story file not opening - an ongoing problem

Aug 19, 2014

Hi there

I am creating transitional training for new software that will be delivered by e-learning in a classroom situation. Every week or so my Storyline file hangs and won't open, causing much stress!

Firstly I realised long screencast recordings in View mode (with additional audio inserted) were ballooning the filesize so I took them out into separate files which I'll link to in a new window.

My original file has started to hang - it has a lot of slides (most of which are screenshots with a marker to click to the next slide). I managed to save the work I lost yesterday by using the import feature, whew. There are around 240 slides (none are Storyline screencasts) and the filesize is 57Mb and the Story view thumbnails are consistently flashing - I've been careful to keep the zoom to 100%.

I have read lots of the threads in the forum about large filesize and am starting to think of how I can chunk my project without losing functionality (or redoing everything I've already built!). Web objects don't display how I want them to and I'd rather not open every simulation in a new window.

The project consists of:

  • 7 main sections linked from an overview graphic. I want users to come back here, and a marker ticked if they have completed the section.
  • 4 screencasts spanning two of the main sections.
  • 16 screenshot created 'system steps' sub-sections over 5 of the main sections. Ideally I'd like the variables I have set to work so it shows the user which of these they have completed too.

Does anyone have any inspiration hits they can share? I'm reluctant to repeatedly lose my work due to yet another file that hangs when it opens.

Many thanks

PS Before you ask - I don't have the option to work on the C drive at all :(

PPS This will be posted on the intranet - no LMS as yet.

Hi Sarah and welcome to Heroes!

It looks like Leslie is also helping you out in this thread, and you mentioned you're unable to work locally on your C drive at all. We're happy to take a look at your file using the link Leslie shared or you can share it here in the forums - but working off a network or shared drive is known to cause issues with .story files.
