Storyline 2 & Cornerstone

Jul 13, 2017

Hi there,

I have module which has a built in quiz.

For the quiz learners have 2 attempts to correctly answer a question. They must receive 90% to pass the quiz.

Should the learner Pass or Fail the quiz we want this information to report into our LMS (through Cornerstone)

I have programed the LMS Reporting as Passed/Failed.

However, in the LMS if a User Fails, the LMS is reporting that the learner is still in progress.

Is there anyway to feed into the LMS so that it shows that the Learner either Passed the Quiz or Failed?

Also, is there a way to restrict the learner from re-opening the module and starting over?

Hi Christina,

Using the status of Passed/Failed should report the completion and success status to your LMS - meaning that the user reached the completion point (your results slide) and their success (scoring elements). Can you see the users score while viewing the results in Cornerstone?

The "in progress" status is specific to an LMS and is based on how it's reading what Storyline is sending. Two ideas to check this out:

  • Enable LMS debug mode and then you'll be able to see the data Storyline sends to the LMS and see where it may be getting missed in Cornerstone
  • Upload a copy of your course to SCORM Cloud to see if it works there - it's an industry standard for testing LMS content.

As for locking down the user from accessing the course again, this is typically handled by the LMS. Two options you could look at in Storyline to help:

  • Enable the Resume prompt and set it to Always. That will force the user to always pick up where they left off, and that way they'd return to the last slide seen (likely the results slide).
  • Limit the number of quiz attempts using the steps here.

Hope that helps, and let us know if you need anything else! We've got an active community of Cornerstone users here in ELH, so you may want to seek them out in this discussion.

Hi Christina,

Have you tested out your content in SCORM Cloud to see if it behaves differently there? That will help you determine whether the problem lies within your file or your LMS.

In regards to restricting the learner from re-opening the module and starting over, that should be a setting you can enable within Cornerstone. We've got lots of CSoD users over in this thread, so you may want to post your question there, as well!

E.g., if things are behaving properly and it is SCORM 2004 - they wouldn't see the fail status until they ran out of attempts.  They would still be able to launch the course after that - but couldn't take the test again.  This is what you will see in SCORM cloud - but might be different in Cornerstone.  (FYI depending on how they handle SCORM - you might get what you want with SCORM 1.2 and not 2004 or vice versa)

Hi Christina,

I use the Cornerstone LMS as well, and I think I have a solution for you.

1. In Storyline, make sure you are publishing to SCORM 2004, 3rd Edition (Cornerstone's preferred format) and set the LMS reporting to Passed/Incomplete. (This is a best practice for any course you want to run in Cornerstone, because it reports both a completion status and a success status. With Passed/Failed or Completed/Incomplete, you're only getting a completion status or a success status, but not both, which can cause the LMS to report the status incorrectly).

2. After uploading the course to Cornerstone, make sure you visit the Course Catalog to set the course metadata. Edit the course.

3. In the General tab, set the Attempts Allowed field to 1, in order to prevent the user from reopening the course.
