Storyline 2 course crashes on Internet Explorer when viewed from the LMS

Jun 23, 2015

Hello Everyone,

I am quite new to storyline. Have developed a course using storyline 2. It consist of multiple videos(around 32) in all. Now the issue is when the course is viewed from the LMS (Moodle) on Internet Explorer (9, 10, 11), it crashes the browser after reaching some screen in the course. When I tried to remove the videos previous to that screen then I could go through the course a bit further from where it crashed last time. When I observe the memory allocation in the browser console it showed around 1.5 GB of space being used.

I don't know what the issue can be, but it is certainly due to the number of videos I have used. Surprisingly everything works smooth on Firefox and Chrome.

Thanx. :)

Hi Tazeem,

Have you tried outside of your LMS in a site such as SCORM Cloud for example? It's an industry standard for testing SCORM content so will also help narrow out the LMS as an issue. I know IE has more difficulty with larger memory courses - and I'd be curious if you allowed the videos to be compressed by Storyline or if you were changing the compression.

Hi everyone,

I am relatively new to storyline as well and I am having a similar issue as Tazeem, whereby Internet Explorer crashes when the content contains multiple videos.

I am using I.E 11 and have been testing using SCORM Cloud and monitoring the Memory usage in the I.E Developer Tools.  The content has been published using standard delivery (i.e. Video quality = 5).

I can see the memory increasing and decreasing as the course progresses however on particular sections it jumps high ~1.5GB and then I.E. crashes.

I have tried splitting the content on the slides that cause the crashes and this helps a little, however when multiple consecutive slides contain videos the issue still occurs.  Perhaps this issue is related to the way the content is buffered?

The issue does not occur when using Chrome.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Glen

Hi Glen,

Do you have videos throughout the entire course or just on that particular slide? Do you have the latest updates of Flash within IE11? Also did you publish the course with the latest update of Storyline 2 Update 7?

You mentioned buffering, and I did want to share how Storyline will load content for your course:

  1. Assets are loaded for the first slide (or the current slide when resuming), so the course can begin playing right away.
  2. Assets are then loaded for the next three slides to prevent playback delays.
  3. Assets are then loaded for the remainder of the course.

As far as video files:

  • MP4 and FLV videos are natively supported in Storyline and will progressively stream by default.
  • SWF files are natively supported in Storyline. However, they won't progressively stream.
  • All other video file formats will be converted to MP4 in Storyline, and they'll progressively stream.

Since it's just within IE11, it's likely connected to how the browser and your internet connection are handling it - have you tried accessing it from a different connection? If you'd like to share a link to the course I'm happy to try it as well from IE11.

Hi Ashley,

The course generally contains videos on multiple slides and sometimes more than one video within a slide.  The videos were captured using the screen capture within storyline,

I am using the latest updates of both Storyline and Flash within IE11.

I have also raised a support case which I have uploaded the content and this is being progressed by support, I may be able to create an example project which I can upload here as an example when I am back in the office.

I have not tried on a different internet connection and will try this at some point, however we have a fibre connection in the office so its pretty fast

Hi Glen,

Thanks for letting me know you're also in a support case - and I see you're working with Robert as well (case #00783074 for my reference). I took a look at it and didn't experience any crashing in IE11 within a Windows 8.1 set up (VMWare on a Mac) even with a lot of clicking around and loading different pages.

I'll keep an eye on your case with Robert as well.
