Storyline 3 - Course won't complete in IE, dead-ends on same slide

Apr 13, 2018

We have a course that was built in Storyline 3 that is hitting a dead-end on the same slide. It isn't freezing because you can go back to previous slides but it gets to one particular slide which won't allow interaction.

The slide in question has three buttons\activities that have to be completed before the learner can proceed. The learner hovers over a button and the cursor turns into the hand that allows you to click on the button. For some of the learners when this slide is presented the buttons are inactive. When that occurs they are also unable to refresh the slide. Audio doesn't play and the volume button is useless. The learner can hit the "Prev" button to return to the previous slide but proceeding again results in the same dead end. This occurs only in IE, Chrome has no issues.

Some of the users are able to complete the course if they restart from the beginning.

We had been unable to replicate the problem but today I managed to "break" the course. I'm capturing traces and debug information but wanted to reach out and see if anyone else has encountered a similar problem.

To summarize -

Storyline 3 course "dead-ends" on the same slide for random users.

Activity buttons on the slide are inactive.

Learners can go back to the previous slide.

Only occurs in IE

I think I have identified the problem. I believe the course is being cached so that if I get to a certain point in the course I may have a slide that requires interaction and which functions but if I back up a slide or two and then come to the same slide again I am working with a cached version that doesn't allow interaction. IE handles caching differently than Chrome so I need to figure out how to implement an IE no-cache option with the course materials.

Hey Kelly,

Sounds like you are doing some additional testing, and I'd be curious to learn what you discover.

If you delete and re-create this slide, do you experience the same behavior? Is this once you resume the course?

I'm not familiar with a cache issue, but if you feel that may be the case, testing in a private/incognito window should work well.

Let me know what you find.

Hi Leslie. That was a great suggestion. I just tried the course in an IE private browser and I get the same result. I can get to the slide once and it works, if I back up and come to it again it's locked up. So apparently it's not the caching.

Incidentally I tried the same experiment in Chrome and where before I thought I had seen that it didn't have the same problem this time it is exhibiting the same issue. (Amendment: Chrome did exhibit the same problem but when I reloaded the slide it played the audio and I was able to select the first option. I tried the same thing (assuming reload = refresh?) in IE but it still doesn't work.)

The slide has audio content that needs to play before you can get to the subactivities, which themselves have do be done in order. The focus now will be on the slide itself and why the LMS (SumTotal) doesn't play the audio the second time through subsequently locking the slide.

Per your suggestion we are going to look at recreating the slide, possibly breaking it to sequential slides.

Thanks!

Thanks for the update, Kelly. Since it's happening in a few browsers now you may also want to test outside SumTotal to confirm if it's the file or not. SCORM Cloud is a great testing option - take a look at the steps here to get started.

If you're able to see the same thing happening in SCORM Cloud, look at that particular slide and it may be worth rebuilding it. It could be something as simple (but hard to track down) such as corruption - these best practices should help you going forward and you could also try importing into a new project to see if that resolves it.
