I think the course is still the same in dimensions. You mentioned grey panels down the side. Your best bet is to check the player settings, something must have been added there that forced the player to grow wider.
It may not have been within the player, but a custom slide player setting as well - you'll want to check into each of those to see if they're set to use "player default" or "custom player".

Agree with Alex, you may have changed something in the player settings, or you may have a slide using custom player properties, does one show a menu?
I'm out of the office at the moment so i can't check.
The only thing i did when i went in was move a text box, widen a shape and then published to FTP. I went no where near the player.
