Storyline 2 vs Storyline 3 opening files

Aug 04, 2017

I have recently upgraded from Storyline 2 to Storyline 3.  I noticed when I had the trial, the files would save with a blueish icon that matched Storyline 3's branding and would automatically open correctly.  I could tell the 3's from the 2's.

Once I purchased the upgrade, all the Storyline 3 files are defaulting to opening in Storyline 2 first instead of opening in Storyline 3.  I get the warning that they were designed in a different version.  They also all have the same look and I can't seem to tell which were designed in 2 versus 3.  Even when I design a new story in 3, it still wants to open in 2.  If I open it inside 3 it opens.

This is very frustrating.

Hi there Debra! Sorry for the confusion. Windows has a setting which allows you to choose which version of Storyline you'd like to set as default for opening files. Here's how you can adjust that setting:

  • Right-click a Storyline file on your Windows desktop
  • Hover over "Open With," and select "Choose another app"
  • Select the version of Storyline you wish to set as default
  • Check "Always use this app to open .story files"
  • Click OK
