Storyline 3/SCORM 1.2: LMS Completion With Passed/Failed Export Option

Oct 22, 2020

Hi Group

I have a query on LMS completions in SCORM 1.2 with Storyline 3.

I have a course with 8 questions banks, each with its own Results slide. There is also a 'master' results slide that references the 8 'child' Results slides to compute and send a completion status back to the LMS (each of the children must be passed for an overall course pass). The course is published with a Passed/Failed completion option.

When a learner passes the course, everything seems to be OK. The Passed status is sent to the LMS and the course is set to Completed.

On a fail, however, I get a SCORM communication log that looks like this (excerpt):

[09:09:57.691] LMSSetValue('cmi.core.lesson_status', 'failed') returned 'true' in 0.002 seconds
[09:09:57.691] CheckForSetValueError (cmi.core.lesson_status, failed, cmi.core.lesson_status, , )
[09:09:57.691] Element is: lesson_status
[09:09:57.691] Call is error free.
[09:09:57.691] StoreValue (cmi.core.lesson_status, failed, cmi.core.lesson_status, , )
[09:09:57.691] Element is: lesson_status
[09:09:57.691] StatusSetInCurrentSession = true, CompletionStatus=incomplete
[09:09:57.691] Allowing status change
[09:09:57.693] RunTimeApi_ImmediateRollup called
[09:09:57.693] Transferring RTE data to Activity data
[09:09:57.693] Rolling up activity data

The part that's sending the Failed status (at the top of the excerpt) is as I'd expect and what I want. But it's also sending the incomplete status a little further down which means that the course is still effectively active in the LMS. This isn't what I want.

On a fail, I want the course to be completed - the learner has arrived at a completion point for the course, it just so happens that they've failed.

Where is this Incomplete flag coming from? It doesn't seem to matter whether the course is set to resume, prompt or never resume. I've tried different combinations of publish/resume settings but this Incomplete status seems to always occur on a Fail.

What Storyline publish setting(s) can I use to get a Completion Status of Completed with a Lesson Status of Failed? Is what I'm seeing expected behaviour from Articulate's perspective? Is this something that's mandated in the SCORM specification?

BTW, I don't think it's significant in this case, but the suspend data is overflowing as it's too big for the SCORM 1.2 4k limit.

Thanks for any insight into this query.

Hi Pete,

Storyline 3 communicates course completion to a learning management system (LMS) as soon as learners meet the completion requirement—either when they view the required number of slides or when they reach a specific quiz result slide. You get to choose the tracking option when you publish.

The following article outlines a couple of options if your LMS can track both success and completion. You mentioned using Passed/Failed, but it sounds like you may have used Passed/Incomplete.

In addition, here is some information regarding SCORM Suspend Data Limits. Does your LMS support SCORM 2004?
