I've discovered a disparity between the compression of images inserted as objects (via insert-->picture) and those set as Backgrounds (via design-->background styles-->format background).
As you can see in this preview, the inserted image is of a much higher quality that the same image set as a background.

It's quite strange and is now making me second guess all the decisions regarding using backgrounds in templates.
I have seen this as well. Fortunately I was using this with a blur and then highlighting portions of the screen with shapes that had the background as the fill. When you do that the blurriness does not occur.
