I'm so sorry you're experiencing this. I spotted the support case you created, and I see that my teammate Jose has asked for the troublesome file. Be sure to use the private upload link he sent so we can keep troubleshooting this!
Ask yourself, “If my computer screws up what I’m working on right now, would I be upset?” The answer is the answer to “Should I make a backup right now?”
I am having the same issue at the moment, except both my back up and my original source file is saying the exact same thing "This project is invalid or corrupt and cannot be opened. It may have been created in an earlier version of storyline".
I have submitted my file, I am hoping it will get sorted soon.
Hello And B, and welcome to the community, Cristina! Sorry for the trouble you're both facing.
Cristina, I'm having trouble finding a support case related to this. Do you have a case number handy? If you haven't gotten around to it yet, no worries, use this link to work with us directly.
I responded to your post over here, And B, but if this issue isn't related, could I have you share more details here along with a file so we can troubleshoot further?

It's a continuous problem with this software. It's like working with a ticking bomb. You never know when the file will open again.

We'll reach out soon after hearing from you!
I am having the exact same issue!!
What can I do to fix this?
The file size is 70 mb
But I can't share the file due to company's confidentiality
you can check if the internal file structure is damaged (.story = .zip) with 7z (https://www.7-zip.org)
install and mouse right-click on the .story file => Test archive
if you get such an error message (Data error) - the file is gone, you need a backup
