Storyline 6 variable text bug

Jul 24, 2014

I'm having problems with the new Storyline 6 - as soon as a variable is entered into a text field it behaves in odd ways. On one page it forced all the formatting before and after it to play up (there were several different formats in the field for heading etc) and on other pages it displayed it as a different font type in the HTML5 export. The variable text would also shrink itself depending on what other text was in the field even though I have all of my fields set so they don't allow Autofit. I've had to extract the variables and try and fit them on the page in alignment with the other text which is a really awkward solution.

Is there any idea if this will be resolved in a quick patch?

Hi Emily,

Before we're able to provide any information on a solution, we need to test and verify the issue.

Are you able to reproduce this issue in a new file, or share the original project so we can test this on our end? We'll need to look at the .story file to test the issue, if possible.

Also, please keep in mind that the file needs to be smaller than 20 MB. If the file is larger than this, you may have trouble uploading to the forums.

If you can, please create a quick screen recording to walk us through the issues you're seeing so we can test this on our end and share it with our Quality Assurance team if we're able to verify that this is an issue with Update 6.

Thanks very much for bringing this to our attention! The more information we have on this, the better.

Best,

Christine

Hi Christine,

Unfortunately due to the variable issue and another one I logged regarding the hovers not returning to original state when published in HTM5 I've had to reinstall version 5 in order to do my work. I'd love to be able to provide you with an example but I've got too many courses I need to publish at the moment to be able to reinstall 6.

Thanks for chasing it up though.

Good day

I had the time to easily reproduce the bug. Just make a variable and set a text value (at least a paragraph) triggered at the beginning of the slide. Then create one box with "Resize shape to fit text" checked. inside type the name of the variable between two "%" symbols. Finally duplicate the box and put the value of the variable directly into the textfield for comparison. The attached file should help you.

Hi Walter,

This thread dates back to  Storyline 1 - and it looks like you're using Storyline 2 just to note. I did want to share that the variable reference box will not dynamically resize to fit the variable value - so you will want to set it to be as large as needed to accommodate your variable text.
