Storyline Audio Device

Oct 15, 2013

We’re having a very big problem with our Storyline courses not displaying content when audio devices are disabled.

When I have my headphones/speakers unplugged, my PC automatically disables the audio device, so they are all disabled.

When I preview a course, or view a published course while the audio is disabled like this (including in our LMS), the content of a slide will display up until the point where audio would come in, and freezes and displays no further.

This happens on any page with audio, in any course, although we have come to realise that it does not happen when viewing content in Google Chrome.

So it's very strange, a disabled audio device restricts some of our clients from running our content.

We are eager to hear any solutions you may be able to offer.

Hi Chris and welcome to Heroes!

This sounds like very unusual behavior. Just to confirm, this happens when you preview the course locally on your computer and when you test the published version from within your LMS? Are you able to share the .story file here with us or if you'd prefer to share it privately you can upload it here?

Hi Ashley,

Yes this occurs in preview mode, a full published course running on our LMS and also locally out of our LMS.

We have tested this further an can confirm courses with audio will freeze and not run if the workstation does not have a sound card or the sound card is disabled.

This is happening in any Storyline course, although I have submitted a sample story file and also a screen recording to support, under the case ID #00362026

I would appreciate your thoughts as we have not heard back from support.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

This issue still seems to be present in Update 5, as I tested the original file you shared with Regil and played it within IE10 and experienced the same behavior. As Regil may have shared before, the workarounds are to:

  • Use Google Chrome to play the course, or:
  • Enable the computer's audio

I updated our QA team to let them know it persists in Update 5, and will keep this thread updated if hear additional information to share.

Thanks for checking back in.

Hello! I am having troubles getting the the Audio to record while recording a screen. I can do them both seperately, but if I try to turn the audio on while the screen recording is running, is says "no audio" and the drop down shows no audio with a green checkmark. I cannot get it to show any options. I have checked the playback and recording settings on my pc and checked that the microphone is enabled on my headset as well and I am still having no luck! When I go to the sound settings, the microphone and speaker options are greyed out and I cannot make them available for selection. Please help!!

Thanks!!
Chris

Hi Chris and welcome to Heroes!

Have you already tried the troubleshooting steps here?   You mentioned being able to record audio separately within Storyline, so I'd also recommend conducting the troubleshooting steps here to fix unusual or erratic behavior within Storyline.

Please keep us posted on how things are working after reviewing the above.
