Storyline crashes when inserting recording

Feb 19, 2021

Hello,

Has anyone run into the issue where Storyline crashes while inserting a screen recording? I'm able to record and choose where I want to insert the recording, then it begins inserting it but the application closes before it's complete so the recording does not save. Thanks for your help!

Hey, Jaclyn! Sorry to know about this experience. I tried inserting an MP4 video, with a file size of 32 MB, to Storyline 360, v.3.48.24159.0, and it worked fine.

Let me help you get to the bottom of this by eliminating some possibilities.

1. What version of Storyline are you working with? You may go to the Help tab on the Storyline ribbon and click About Articulate Storyline to find this.

2. Is there an error message that pops up before Storyline closes?

3. What is the format and file size of your video? The maximum limit for each video is 2 GB.

4. Does this happen regardless of the video (or screen recording) that you try to insert to the Storyline file?

5. Do you observe the same issue when the same video file is inserted to a blank .story file?

I recommend checking that your Storyline app is updated. Additionally, make sure that your files are all on your local hard drive to avoid unexpected behavior due to latency or file corruption.

If this issue does not happen on a blank .story file, you may use this to record your screen, then export the video. This will allow you to reuse the video in your other .story projects and save you time from having to record it over and over. This can be an efficient workaround while we figure out the root cause of this. To do this, check this out.

If you could share the video file here or provide its download link, I'll be glad to test it for you.

I hope to hear again from you!

Hi Luiza,

Thanks so much for your help!

  1. The version I am using is v3.46.23620.0
  2. There is no error message that pops up. The program just closes abruptly.
  3. I haven't tried uploading a file, I've only done a screen recording. I'm not sure what the size is of the recording, but I did try doing the recording in smaller sections and it worked better (there was one time where it closed again, but perhaps that particular section was too large).  I think for one of them, the recording was going to be about 19 slides. Is there a limit to the amount of slides it can create in one recording?

Thanks again!

Hello, Jaclyn! I'm glad that you've found a workaround and thanks for providing more pieces of information. The version that you're using is an older one. In all of the apps that I use, not limited to Storyline, I've learned that using the latest version is always the safest bet as it contains improvements and the fixes to known/reported bugs. If you'll agree to this, you can easily update yours by following the steps here.

With regard to the maximum number of slides that can be squeezed into one recording, I haven't found a reference about this, but I can confirm that there is a time limit though. It's 2 hours per recording per this guide.

If the same issue is happening on the latest version, should you decide to give this a shot, and the file's not certainly reaching the two-hour mark, please let me know so we can look into this further.

Best of luck!
