Storyline export as SCORM 1.2 allows spaces in Identifier field

Oct 23, 2012

Please forgive me if this has already been answered. I tried to find an answer before composing this post.

In Storyline, I am able to type characters other than A-Z, a-z, 0-9 and the underscore (_) in the Identifier field of the LMS Lesson SCORM Information section when exporting a course as SCORM 1.2.  In fact, the Identifier field contains whatever text the Title field of my course contains. (see storyline.png below).

However, in Presenter '09 this isn't the case.  Spaces and other non-allowed characters are converted to underscores (_) -- see presenter.png below -- and I cannot edit the Identifier field to include any characters other than A-Z, a-Z, 0-9 and the underscore (_).

We recently had issues with a Storyline course (exported in SCORM 1.2 format) that had spaces and hyphens in the course title not tracking properly in the LMS.  Certain information was not written to the gradebook and the user was marked as completed whether the user passed or failed the final exam (which was the determining factor for course completion).  The same SCORM 1.2 package in SCORM Cloud did not produce such issues.  After working with our LMS vendor, it was determined that when the course was uploaded, because of certain characters in the course title (particularly the hyphen), the SCO name was written in a manner that didn't sync up.

Course Title:  Legislative Issues - Updated
LMS was looking for this SCO name:  Legislative_Issues_-_Updated

Actual SCO name created in LMS db during import:   Legislative_Issues___Updated

Had we created this course in Presenter '09, this wouldn't have been an issue.  We were able to fix the issue with the Storyline course by removing any illegal characters in the Identifier field and reuploading.  However, I was wondering if this is an issue specific to our LMS or would other LMSes also have problems with characters not contained in the A-Z, a-z, 0-9 and underscore character set.

We support about 70 organizations many of whom use Articulate products so I want to make sure we provide accurate information to users in regards to exporting their Storyline courses for use in an LMS.

Thanks!

Robb

Hey Robb,

Thanks for the post. Because this doesn't seem to be a widely-reported issue, and because you mentioned that you couldn't replicate the issue in SCORM Cloud, I'm lead to believe this may be unique to your LMS. But we'd be happy to take a closer look into it just to confirm. Would you mind opening a ticket with our support team, including your .story file, so one of our support engineers can work with you on this? Thanks!
