Storyline Free Form Interaction - Captions do not work as buttons in Safari
Mar 22, 2018
A coworker of mine had a bizarre issue in a course he had built. It contained multiple "pick one" style interactions where the user would select a "word balloon" (a Caption object) to answer the interaction. Clicking the balloon changes it to a Selected state. Hitting "Submit" submits the interaction.
Testing in all browsers and devices worked fine until he tried Safari. Apparently Safari (both desktop and the iOS version) does not register a Caption object as clickable. I tried adding a specific trigger to each Caption (on click this caption set state to Selected) but that did nothing. Finally, I replaced the Captions with Shape Objects. This worked.
But now we have a course with literally a hundred interactions that basically need to be rebuilt. Please address this in the next release.
-Storyline 3 updated to most recent version.

Hi Randall,
Is this sample file similar to the set-up of your coworker's file? Could you test that link in Safari and let me know if the interaction works properly there?
Keep me posted on how it goes!
The output you posted worked in Safari. I forwarded the .story file to my co-worker. He said the only difference he could see was that your captions have a hover state and his do not. I tried add hover states to his captions but it still did not work in safari.
Hi Randall,
Can you share one of these .story files with us? That way our team can test and spot anything else that may be different and contributing to this?
I have a file that I can share. Please send me an upload location.
Hi Randall,
If you'd prefer to not upload here in the ELH community you can send along to our Support Team here.
Here is a couple of pages
Hi Randall,
Thanks for sharing your file. I noticed they did have a hover state, but it was the same as the normal state. I just wanted to confirm I was looking at the right file, since you mentioned not having a hover state.
I'm seeing the same as you described while viewing in Safari with the HTML5 output - but it does appear to work normally in Chrome and Firefox (also the HTML5). I'll look at setting up a file to match what you've used and see if I can recreate the issue in a new file as well!
Thanks Ashley,
With regards to the hover state, I had added those to see if that was the issue but it didn't make a difference. At one point I had also added a trigger to specifically set the Caption to the Selected state as well. The problem seems to be that Safari doesn't recognize the Captions as clickable at all so none of the triggers matter.
Hi Randall,
Okay - here's a look at my file and published output. It doesn't have all the slides you have, but it does have the selected/hover and changing to the hidden state with a trigger.
I just popped this into review and on Mac and iOS I can select and submit the questions

Ashley,
I can select the Captions in your version but can't submit the interaction. I get the "you must complete the question" feedback when I hit Submit
Phil,
in Safari 11.0.3 on the Mac the Captions remain un-selectable in your version. Also I do not have Storyline 360
I did not try mobile Safari for either.
On my iPhone I cannot select the captions. But on my iMac not sure which version of safari it works fine and iPad Safari works and submits. Must be a bug. Really odd. I have switched off my machine, have you tried using the captions in the shapes menu (I am sure they were there) I always worked on the understanding that there were no difference between captions and states except they had extra space on the tab menu so split them out.

Hi Phil,
Shapes that look like Captions work fine (it's in the original comment). The problem was my coworker had built dozens of these using Caption Captions.
Sorry I should read more. I think you should open a support case.

Hi Randall,
I'd agree with Phil that a support case would be the best next step. Be sure to let us know your case number so we can follow along!
