Storyline preview different

May 02, 2013

I am quite new at Storyline and have noticed that when I click to preview my work, the layout is different from what I am actually working on.

For example, I have text in a text box which overflows off the bottom of the text box.  When I click preview it the slide seems to be stretched and all the text fits in to the text box with spare white space at the bottom of the text box however when I'm in the 'design' mode, it falls outside the text box.

Is there a setting or something that I am missing?

Welcome to the community, Mark!

There's a couple things we can try on your end to see if we can improve the way your course is behaving while previewing.

First, please make sure that you're working with local project files:

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

If you are working locally and this still happens, please check  your system's DPI. Storyline doesn't currently support 120 DPI. If your system is set to 120 DPI, you may experience erratic behavior, such as:

*  Elements of the application are misplaced or distorted.

*  Objects are misplaced or distorted when previewed or published.

*  Zoomed images don't work as expected.

*  Font sizes are incorrect after using the translation features.

Here's how you can switch to 96 DPI

If your files are all local and you've set your DPI to 96, and the issue persists, please make sure you're running the most recent version of Storyline. To find this information, click on "Help" and "About Articulate Storyline". If you are not running version 2 (1212.1412), please download and install the update from the link below.

Storyline > Download Update 2

I hope this helps! Let us know if you see any improvement.

Thanks :)

Thank you for the responses.

I have tried everything your have recommneded Christine.  All settings appear to be normal.  I also have the latest version of Storyline.

Here are screen shots of what is happening.  You can see in the preview, the text all fits nicely within the box but in the design view it falls outside the text box.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the screenshots! Also, thank you for trying all of that. Sorry to hear that didn't fix the issue, though.

Are you using an OTF (OpenType) font, by any chance? First, you may want to try using a different font just to see if the same thing happens. If you can, please try using a TrueType font.

If you're using OpenType (OTF) fonts in Articulate Storyline, you may find that text doesn't look right when you preview or publish. Storyline supports OpenType fonts. However, a Microsoft Windows update released December 11, 2012 prevents OpenType fonts from rendering properly.
We provided a programmatic workaround for this issue in Update 2 for Storyline. Please review the following article for more information:
If the problem continues, we'd be happy to take a look and see what's going on. You'll be able to attach the .STORY file on the second page of the following form:
