Storyline States and animation
Sep 24, 2012
Can I create a state that includes an animation? I want to animate a shape upon mouse hover. For example, take a look at this template on template monster. I want to re-create the animation and color change that occurs when you rollover each menu item.
I have tried simply adding the animation to the hover state but nothing shows up. I also tried adding the animation to a new layer and setting a trigger that says to show that layer upon rollover, but that really doesn’t work either.
Any suggestions?

Hi Gordon
Check out a demo I did during beta back in Aug last year (wow, really that long ago?!).
You can ignore the mechanics of the demo itself and focus only on the buttons. I can't remember the app I used - it allowed me to create multiple frames and save as a GIF (I think) so as to mimic an animation. SL still sees this as a single image. But there are limitations (as per my intro in that post).
HTH
For the record, the demo is 'hosted' from Dropbox hence why it plays pretty slow.
Hi Simon,
Thanks forr your reply and link to your demo. Its a shame that this funcitonaility is not built into SL, maybe the next version will have it. And I think that although the anim gif works, its a bit quirky. Maybe too quirky for prime time.
But its great you found a workaround.
Yep, I'd like to see SL take a few more tips from Flash in terms of handling visuals in particular. Most of the mechanics within SL are already excellent - it's the glitchy/jittery bits that need ironing out so as to improve the fluidity of what's happening on-screen.
Gordon - please would you submit a Feature Request for this?
The Dev team do look at everything, and this would make a great addition to the product.
Thanks
Bruce
And remember to make a feature request ... the more of us that do so, the more likely our ideas will get listened to and acted upon

PS - and do not forget to make another Feature Request....
I just submitted the feature request... thanks again!
Well... I just happened to see this screenr and it appears you CAN add animaitons to states: https://player.vimeo.com/video/149068053 Take a look at 3:15.
@Gordon what happened to the screenr link?
Hi Nick,
Looks like there was an extra period in the link. Is this the one you're looking for?
Thank you!
Has there been any progress on this feature? I'm trying to make a slide that's a picture collage, but the other pictures slide away when you hover over a certain one. I have the state triggers all set up, but I'd like them to slide instead of just jump.
Hi StatEast and welcome to Heroes!
I'm not sure I'm following your set up, and what you'd like it to do. Are you able to share your .story file here or even that one slide so that the community can take a look?
Absolutely - where should I post it?
I'm trying to animate the change from one state to the next, with states being position on the slide. I want them to "fly in" to the new state, and "fly out" to the normal state when the trigger is inactive.
Hi StatEase,
You can post it right here in the thread by using the paperclip icon - or you're welcome to start a new thread, either way works.
The idea with this slide is that when you mouse over a lolcat, the other lolcats move away from it, then slide back when the mouse moves away.
Hi StatEase,
Thanks for sharing the .story file - and it was my first real foray into lolcats - cute!
So with the set up you have right now, the items do shift down, left or right based on which one you hover - and that seems to look good. If you'd like to add animation you won't be able to add it to the states themselves, but you could set it up with layers. So what you'd set up is to show the layer when the user hovers, and then once the layer starts animate out the elements. You'll probably need to play with this a bit to get the desired look and feel.
Thanks for the workaround. I'll definitely be requesting this as a feature - animating between states makes too much sense for it not to be a feature.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts in the form of a feature request here!
