Supporting Mobile Devices via Litmos LMS

Jan 27, 2014

Hello Everyone,

If this question has been beaten to death already, I apologize. Just point me in the right direction and I will be happy to read what is there.  We are using Articulate Storyline to create courseware that we are publishing via the Litmos LMS platform.

Litmos supports mobile devices if you build your courses using their platform. I would prefer to maintain a bit more flexibility with regard to our future LMS decisions. In the meantime, my audience is screaming for mobile device support.

Has anyone had success publishing Articulate generated courseware to a Litmos LMS system with mobile device support? I am not quite up to novice level yet and would love to learn how this can and should be done if it is at all possible.

Thanks,
Gordon

Hi Christine,

Thank you for your reply... I must admit that we have not yet reached that point, but if all it takes is to republish using tin can then I think we are going to be OK...

Another question, does this constitute the need to publish two versions, one for mobile and one for PC users? Or an we publish a single version that does both?

Cheers,

Gordon

Hi Gordon,

If the LMS supports Tin Can, and from what I've seen (from other topics), Litmos should support it, then the option to go mobile with your courses ought to be there.

No, you won't need to publish multiple versions - not unless you want to completely customize a version of your course for iPad viewing. For example, if you want to display the menu a little differently for those using an iPad, you could certainly do so.

Unless you want to do something along those lines, you're certainly not required to publish multiple modules. That could cause more trouble than solve trouble, if you ask me :) You'd have to provide two separate links to learners and have them choose which one they'd like/need to view.

When you launch a course from the URL it will look for the Flash player. If the device doesn't play Flash then it will load the HTML5 version of the course.

If you're launching the URL from the iPad then it will try to load via the Articulate Mobile Player which can be downloaded for free from iTunes. Without the Articulate Mobile Player the content can be viewed on the iPad using Mobile Safari and the HTML5 output. The mobile player is ideal as it will give you the best playback. Currently the Mobile Safari browser has some limitations playing media and interactive content.

So basically, depending on the options you select for your output, the device will determine which version to view depending on the URL you provide. When you view it on a PC, you'll either want to share the .html (Flash) or .html5 (HTML5) URL.
