Survey Question type "how many" not accepting the number 0 (zero) as a value (Using survey to report variables back to LMS)

Jun 24, 2019

Hi all,

I'm using survey questions to report the values of variables back to our LMS. I have a combination of text and numeric variables and am using both 'short answer' and 'how many' question types.

For my numeric variables, the number 0 (zero) is a valid response. The 'how many' questions are not accepting 0. During preview, I'm getting "invalid answer, you must answer the question before continuing".

All thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

Hi there, William. We've got an issue where setting the variable of those slides to 0 when the timeline starts will cause the invalid answer prompt to appear. A current workaround is to change the requirement in Form View to "user may skip."

I'll add this discussion to our report so we can update you with any changes to that behavior. If that doesn't match what's happening on your end, however, please let me know. We can take a closer look!

I'm having the same issue with the Numeric graded question. It works fine for any number other than zero, otherwise I get the Invalid Answer box.

I'm using it as a place holder for data from two Result Slides before it goes to the master Result Slide that is reported to the LMS, so luckily I can just use the survey question instead and set it to 'user may skip.'

I've played around with this a little and I keep experiencing the same issue.

I set the questions to "users may skip"

Preview the course

The course stalls/stops on the slide after the first 'numeric response' that has a zero/0 value. No error message etc, it just pauses on the next slide  (regardless of if it's text or an interaction programmed to submit a different variable on timeline start).

Hi Crystal, thanks for keeping us posted regarding this issue. Enabling "user may skip" in Form View helps to avoid receiving "invalid answer", but it is also important to be able to report the number zero itself. Is there a workaround for this? Do you know if it is going to be fixed soon in a future update?

Using text variables with the 'short-answer' survey slides is not an option as calculations need to be performed. Also, I want to avoid using javascript (to save the numeric variable as a text variable in the end) so my module can work with smartphones & tablets.

Any further info or ideas are much appreciated

Hi Christos,

I don’t currently have any updates, but you are now subscribed to this conversation which means as we share updates here, you’ll automatically be notified.

Unfortunately, changing the requirement to "user may skip" in Form View is the only workaround we have for now, but hopefully someone in the community can offer their experience!
