Tab/Focus Order not working as it should

Hello, we are trying to build a course which is compatible with NVDA screen reader but the screen reader isn't reading any of the text on screen like it should. I understand that with the new update the screen reader should just read everything on screen without hitting tab, but the only way I can get the screen reader to read the content is if I click on it, and if I press tab it only highlights the buttons on the player and nothing in the course. I also saw that you can use the up and down arrows to cycle through the tab/focus order, but that doesn't work either. 

If you have any suggestions on how we can get the screen reader to work properly please let me know.
