Text Entry equal to/not equal to blank problems on iPad

Jan 04, 2019

Hello heroes,

I've created several text entry slides requesting input from the learner. My SME wanted to make it so they had to enter something before continuing, so I've added the trigger to a Next button to jump to the next slide if the variable is not equal to (blank) and to show a layer prompting them to enter something if variable is equal to (blank)

This has worked appropriately until I started testing it on the iPad after uploading the SCORM to our LMS. When I enter some letters and press Next, I get the prompt telling me to enter something. So it's like the text entry isn't registering that I have entered text. However, the weird thing is... if I wait several minutes and then click Next again, it will jump to the next slide.

I had a coworker troubleshoot it. He also got the prompt when entering text, but he said that if he clicked the Play icon on the bottom left and then Next again, it worked for him.

This is a Storyline 360 scene that I've published and inserted into a Rise course. I've attached some of the slides (they're all basically set up the same).

Any thoughts?

Thanks - Katie

Hi Katie,

Have you tested if it works when the virtual keyboard has been hidden/collapsed? I know our team is investigating an issue where a numeric and/or text Entry will not set the value when the virtual keyboard is visible in Safari and Google Chrome browsers for iPads/iPhone (iOS).

That sounds like it matches what you're seeing, as clicking on the next button or the play button would collapse the virtual keyboard.

I'll keep you posted here as our team continues to investigate this issue - but if you think you're running into something else, let me know and we'll do a bit more digging!

Hi Katie,

I don't have an ETA on this one yet, but will let you know here as soon we have more to share.

In the meantime, you'll want to look at instructing your learners to press enter or click outside the data entry field onto the slide itself. That'll collapse the keyboard and execute the trigger to "set Data Entry to the typed value when the control loses focus."

One of the fixes addresses the issue where data-entry fields didn't always accept values from virtual keyboards on mobile devices.

Here's how you can update Storyline 360 to see everything this release has to offer. Let us know what you think!
