The mystery of Master slides

Hi I am trying, with difficulty to create master slides. 

My question is why when I import a master slide it does not hold the formatting, buttons, triggers, states or layers, surely this is the point of master slides.

I have attached a sample, as you can see I have a master slide, three buttons and three layers with sample content. Am I missing something here?
