Timer to use in Storyline
Nov 20, 2013
As some of you probably know by know I'am developing a basic math course for primary and secondary school. The idea in this is that the learners have to help 'Chunky' around the world by passing several information points.
On each information point they can increase their knowledge about a certain topic. If they don't get this knowledge they can't help Chunky to the next information point. On each info point the learners can 'play' some games and take all the time that they need. After this they have to do an 'evaluation' about the things that they've learned by playing the games.
For this 'evaluation' I was searching for a kind of timer that I can use to measure their time. I couldn't find the right one so I designed one by myself. (you can see the timer in action by clicking on the image). If you like the timer feel free to use it in your own courses. The images that I've used are here
If you have any questions or suggestions, please let me know.

Hi Colin! This thread is a bit dated and I'm not sure if Michael is still subscribed to this particular one. If you do not hear back soon, you are welcome to reach out directly via the 'Contact Me' option on the user profile.
Thanks Leslie,
I have seen this thread, however, the link provided is broken. Just thought I would let you know.
Hi Colin!
What link are you referring to?
The hyperlink attached to the word "Here" in the line : "The images I used are here." I get the same thing if I click on the image at the top of the screen.
Oh, thanks Colin! Paul is not staff, so that's not a link that we can correct internally. You are welcome to reach out to him directly to see if there is an updated link or if he would be able to assist you.
The logic for the timer is on a layout in the master slide. The timer loops between two layers on this slide. Triggers on these layers change the minute and sec. values.
I came up with a nice trick for timers in Storyline. You can add a video countdown timer, then Jump To something when the media ends.
Hi, Jill -- Thanks for sharing your idea! You are also welcome to share a sample file illustrating what you've shared so others can take a look if you'd like! :)
Thanks Christoph for sharing! You may also want to share as a new post in the Building Better Courses side of the forums.
Hi, Norah -- Thanks for reaching out and I see that Christopher has stopped in with a great example that looks like it will work for your needs! For good measure, I thought I might also pass along the following discussions:
Hope that helps!
HI Jill, I loved this idea and it would be perfect where you have one slide. I was hoping to put the countdown video into my master slide and have it play continuously over a number of slides, but I can't figure out a way to have it play the whole time. I found it resets to the beginning on each new slide. Would be interested to hear how you used this great idea. Thanks Frances
Hi Norah, sorry I was trying to comment on Jill Rashid's idea of inserting a video countdown above, which I thought was an inspired idea. Realise I should have used the Quote function under her idea. Does your comment refer to the video countdown idea, just checking?
Hi Frances,
I used the video because I wanted it to re-start on each slide. There is a built-in timer function in Storyline that works the way you want it to... where it continues over the whole course if you use quiz slides. The option is on the Results slide. You might be able to make that work. :)
Thanks!
JIll
Hi Frances,
The timer within the results slide will appear up at the top of your Storyline player, and as Jill mentioned it'll appear throughout the course. Even if you don't have a quiz, you could still include a results slide with the timer and just either dont' have the user navigate to that slide or change how it looks so that they don't thiink it's associated with a quiz.
I know this is years later but this was so helpful!! Thank you.
Hey paul,
This is really good example & thanks for sharing this. I am trying to customise this for long quiz but i didn't find the variable that you have set for 2.30 mins duration. I want to know how do i change this duration for 10 mins.
Hi Amol,
Paul originally posted this over two years ago, so you may want to look at messaging him directly using the contact me button on his profile to see if he's able to share some additional information with you about how to change the duration and other elements in this custom set up.
Best of luck with your project!
Hi Amol. You will have two variables to work with, Minute and Seconds. You will see that Paul set Minute to 2, you would set that to 10. Paul set seconds to 30, but since you will be starting with 00 seconds, the default value would be 0. I think that should work.
Ashley,
This is fantastic. It helps with much more than just learning about Storyline.
Thanks!
David.
Thanks Ashley,
I had done some more R&D & i had got the solution. Once more thank you so much for reply
Thanks Adena,

Happy to hear that David and Amol.
Hi Colin...I had the same issue...until I looked at the slide master...that's where all the action happens.
Thanks Michael - this discussion is a bit older, so Colin may not be subscribed but I appreciate you sharing for anyone else who comes across it!
Thank you so much Christoph! It's been a long time, but it's exactly what I looking for. Now, I just have to find how to reset it to the beginning when the user come back on the slide and I will be so happy!
thanks again! :)
