Track number of times a slide is viewed in a SCORM package

Sep 12, 2017

Hi,

I may have missed something here but can anyone tell me how to track:

Scenario: I have 3 slides in a SCORM package (a video slide and picture & text slide)

From a content POV

1) the # of times a specific learning object has been clicked/viewed? The intention is to find out the most viewed content within the SCORM package.

From a user progress perspective

1) the user (and a specific user) has clicked on a specific learning object and its contents

I'm using Storyline 360.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Ivy! You've got some great questions, and I'd like to get some more clarification on what you're trying to do:

  1. From a content point of view, do you need data for the most-clicked object based on all of the users who take the course? For example, if 100 users access the course, do you need to know which object was clicked the most often by those 100 people?
  2. From a user perspective, do you need a visual indicator that an object has been clicked? If so, check out States. For example, the Selected or Visited state will appear after the learner clicks on an object, to indicate that it has already been clicked.

If you can provide further details, I'm sure folks in the community would have more ideas for you!

Hi Alyssa,

Thank you for your response!

On both points, we're looking at it from a reporting POV.

1) Yes. An added bonus would be to know the number of clicks for the other slides. This way we can see the most to the least 'popular' learning object types.

2) As an SME, they'd like to know who has 'clicked' or 'viewed' a specific learning object.

The module/course itself is formative and I understand packaging this correctly with the right tracking configuration would provide these information but I haven't gotten that setting identified yet.

Any tips on how to best tackle this would be much appreciated!

Hi there, Ivy!  A workaround you might find useful is described in this article on sending the value of a variable to an LMS.  You could potentially track clicks using variables in the course, and use those steps to send that information to your LMS.

For your second request, Alyssa gave you some information for making a visual indication to your learners that they've visited an object.  It sounds like you are looking to get that information on the reporting end, though.  Perhaps using the above method will be helpful for this need, too.  I'm not sure of the different report combinations you can run in the LMS, but getting the value of those clicks there is a start!

I'll invite other community members as well to chime in with how they measure learning engagement in that way.

Thanks for that. I've tried following the instructions on the link you sent. I may be missing something as when I do configure the slide as noted, I don't seem to get all the information I needed.

To be more specific, we're after:

-          How many times these people view the slides (report on slides that have been accessed x number of times, people access this items x times on average, etc…)

-          If there's a resource attached, report on users who downloaded it and number of downloads per person (# of people downloaded this item,

I've attached what I have gotten so far. I've tried publishing it as SCORM 1.2, 2004 3rd edition but still the same results.

Thanks again in advance.
