Tracking data from multiple quizzes and completion status

Apr 03, 2024

Hello all, I have a course that has a custom pre-check quiz with a corresponding results slide. Based on which questions the user got wrong, the user will have to go back and finish one or modules. Each module has it's own quiz bank and it's corresponding results slide. So, 4 modules with 4 quiz banks and 4 results slides and one final assessment with a results slide.

Tricky part: I want to track the quiz data for the modules (and the course completion status shouldn't be based on any of these modules) but I want the completion status based on the final results slide only. Is that possible to do?

I have created course completion triggers on the 4 module results slide to say Fail/Incomplete. I have two course completion triggers on the final assessment results slide (one on the success layer and one on the failure layer).

Hi Raj!

Happy to help with this!

If you're publishing your Storyline course for LMS, I suggest setting the LMS Reporting option to 'Completed/Failed or Completed/Incomplete'.

This will allow your LMS to track completion status based on the final results slide, and you should be able to see the learner's quiz data in the LMS report. Since different LMSs interpret data differently, would you be comfortable sharing which LMS is being used? Perhaps other members of the community using the same one can provide additional suggestions!

Thanks Steven. I am using SCORM cloud.

If I use the course completion trigger and remove the tracking option of the results slide, the quiz data is not being sent. Is the result slides tracking for all the 4 modules needed on the tracking page if we need the quiz data to be captured?

If the results slides are tracked and the course completion trigger is also present on these results slide, which one takes precedence when the user hits the results page?

Hi Raj,

Happy to chime in!

Tracking completion using both a completion trigger and the Results Slide for your quizzes is possible in Storyline 360. Just keep in mind that the first completion mechanic that is met is what will get reported to the LMS. In your use case, you can have multiple Results Slides in your course and select which one you want to track in the publishing settings. Check out this article for more information:

All of the quiz data in your course will get sent to your LMS as long as they have Results Slides. You can also track the completion using just the final results slide - this will be done in the publishing settings where you can select which quiz the learner needs to complete.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Hi Jose, "the first completion mechanic that is met is what will get reported to the LMS." What does that exactly mean?

If I have the course completion trigger on the results slide to say "Failed/Incomplete" on purpose (as this is just one of the four modules) and I also track the results slide tracked for completion, which one takes precedence? What is the order in which it is executed to find out which one is run first?

Hi Raj,

If the course completion trigger executes first before your quiz is completed, then that's the completion mechanic that will get tracked. If the course reaches the Results Slide first before the course completion trigger executes, then this event will be what registers completion in your LMS. Please note that this will depend on the publishing settings you selected before you published your course. Feel free to share a copy of your project file here so we can check how it's set up!

Sorry if I wasn't clear in my earlier post. My completion trigger is ON the results slide. So, I purposely created the completion trigger to say that the user "Failed/Incomplete" because this is a mini module in the course. So, I am trying to understand how the results slide sends the data and the completion status in this case?

So, the trigger wants to send "Failed/Incomplete" ON the results slide. The results slide is also tracked on the tracking options. So, which one takes precedence here?

I am working with our team to get a sample course as the original course is very big with a lot of quiz questions.

Hi Raj,

If both the completion trigger and the trigger to submit the quiz results are on the same slide, and you are using both to track course completion, the trigger that fires first is what gets sent to the LMS. This means that the order of your triggers plays an important role in determining which is executed first.

Please keep this in mind when designing your course. Can I ask if you've tested your course in an LMS? And if so, what completion marks are you getting for your course?
