Trigger Unhappy: Please Help Me!

Mar 11, 2016

Hello all...I am new to Storyline and have been having quite a bit of fun watching tutorials and practicing with things. I am stuck, however, with a trigger issue that I can't for the life of me work out. I have attached a few images, but let me explain:

- I have a slide with seven shapes on it.

- I have made states for each of the shapes (just normal and hover so far).

- When I put a trigger on one of the shapes, that same trigger gets applied to ALL of the shapes (I am not using the format painter tool).

- When I try to edit the trigger for the second shape, it too makes the trigger apply to all of the shapes, including the one I changed first.

- In essence, I can only get one shape at a time to do what I want.

I must be missing something so super simple that I'm going to kick myself when someone helps me out (please help me...I'm going crazy!). I can't imagine, though...this isn't a layer interaction, just a simple state change.

What am I doing wrong?!

Also, it's not just for the state changes, I now see. It's also for whatever triggers I put there. I just tried to choose the first shape and have a trigger to 'jump to' another slide, and all of the shapes just took on that trigger. The same thing happened: when I tried to change the second shape to go to a different slide, they all changed to have the same trigger, even the first one (and the trigger I put on it is overrided). What is it?!

HI Phil;

I'm sorry...I don't understand your answer...?

Yes, it is with slide 1.1. I want each of those shapes to have their own triggers: one to change the state when you hover, and one to take it to a new slide (the ones that match the name typed in the shape). But when I make a trigger for one (either to change the state or to jump to a new slide), the same trigger is on all of the shapes. For instance, if I take the first one (multiple choice) and make a trigger to jump to the multiple choice slide, ALL of the shapes take that same trigger. When I try to edit the trigger on the next shape to jump to the proper slide, ALL of the shapes take the edit.

So to be clear, each of those shapes should trigger to jump to a different page but I can't make that happen and I don't know why.

Thanks :)

Ok, Phil...

I see what you mean about the hover and I have fixed it so the hover is 'automatic' rather than requiring a trigger.

However, that doesn't change my issue. I can't put different 'jump slide' triggers on each shape. They all just take whatever trigger I put on one, and when I edit the trigger on the next one, they all just take that :(

Here it is attached again (the .story file). I've fixed the hover state thing. Now please look at the trigger; there is only one. Every one of those shapes (multiple choice, etc), has the same trigger. Please change one and then tell me what happens to the rest of them. On my machine - and on my colleague's in another city - all of the shapes are taking on the same triggers and the same edits.

Thanks!

Hi again Phil;

Thanks so much for your help and advice. I haven't looked at your file yet (I will as soon as I finish this), but I figured out what I was doing (actually perceiving) wrong and, as I suspected, it was something pretty silly!

I was looking at the trigger panel on the right as if each object should have its own panel and the panel would change with the click of each object. So it wasn't that each object had the same trigger; it's that it was the first thing in the list. As I add triggers to each object, the trigger list on the right grows. Sorry...I hope that makes sense. If not, just trust that I was overlooking something rather silly in my frustration!

Thanks again!

Hi, Sam -- After you have had a chance to review Phil's file, please feel free to stop back in to let us know if you are all set or if you still need help.

And as you mentioned that you are new to Storyline 2, in addition to the Getting Started with Articulate Storyline 2 information it sounds like you may already be viewing, here are a few more resources you may find helpful to get you up to speed:

Hope that helps! :)
