Triggers - Using two and one isn't working
Nov 17, 2015
Hi Everyone,
I'm sure this is a newbie question but it's making me crazy.
I have two triggers on tabs on a Master Slide:
1. When user clicks, change the state of the tab (changes the color so user knows it's the active tab).
2. When user clicks, navigate to a specific slide (this is listed second...so the color would change and the hyperlink would take user to the designated slide).
It seems I can get ONE or the OTHER...but not both. I realize I've made them both occur when the user clicks but thought that the order would determine how they occur.
Any suggestions? Thanks..this site has been a godsend!

Hi, Margaret -- Thanks for reaching out with your question, and glad to hear you are enjoying the community! I wanted to provide this article, All About Triggers, to give you some additional information than what is available in the tutorial, Adding Triggers. And, I'd like to take a closer look at your file and how things are set up, if possible. Please use the ADD ATTACHMENT button in the bottom left of the reply box and browse for your file from there. :)
HI Christie,
I heard this community was great...you have NO idea how welcome your messages is...as a newbie who HAS to complete this video for a go-live in my office (and was supposed to have it done last week), I welcome your help on a few fronts.
HERE IS WHAT HAPPENED:
I think i figured out the problem (file is attached). I was creating triggers so the links would turn orange but then i ALSO directed each one toward a new scene. I am thinking maybe they DID turn orange..but that trigger was satisfied so of course it didn't remain orange in the new scene.
HERE IS WHAT I WANT TO HAPPEN:
I want a user to click a tab, have it go to the designated page and then have THAT tab REMAIN a different color - orange - so the user is aware THAT is the tab chosen right now. It doesn't have to turn color..it could be pushed all the way out to the left so it appears different, etc. I just used color to help.
For example, if i click "Add PowerPlans via Orders Menu" and it's directed to Scene 2, I want it to be orange while in Scene 2 so the user knows exactly which scenario he/she is viewing and can decide if that is, in fact, what he/she wants to use. If it isn't, he/she would be able to click the CORRECT tab and THAT tab would be orange when it is displayed in the appropriate scene.
Feel free to change anything you want. Thanks again!
Hi, Margaret -- Thanks so much for your patience and apologies for the delay in response! I will check out your file momentarily, and as always, the community is also welcome to share their ideas to help with what you'd like to achieve, as well! :)
Hi, Margaret -- After taking a look at your file, I am now clear on what it is you are trying to accomplish, but I'm still working on tweaking your file. I plan to reach out again tomorrow morning, but if you would like our Support Engineers to take a look for you before then, you are welcome to submit a case/your file using this form and they will be able to provide more immediate assistance. :)
I can work on the screens that aren't involved with the master slide tonight. Thx against for your help. :-)
I think I would set Scene 2 so that the Scene 2 tab was pulled out (or whatever) anytime that the user was in scene two. Then when they return to the main menu, pull it out so they know they have visited that scene. (And it sounds like you can do this already.)
Hi, Margaret -- Yes, my suggestion would have to be pretty much in line with what Walt suggested, However, if you would like to broaden the base of exposure for your query, you are welcome to post over in the Building Better Courses forum for additional design ideas you could try! Best of luck with your project, and please feel free to share your finished project. :)
Thanks again for your help...for some reason, I don't have the option to choose Scene 2 in the triggers for the tab (I am using a Master Slide and can Jump to Scene 2 but can't Choose a State in Scene 2). Is there a reason Scenes can't be chosen?
I apologize if my inexperience with Storyline is showing ...I really have learned quite a bit already!
Hi, Margaret -- Upon further review, it appears that the Selected state does not work in Slide Masters, which would be a bug (and I will need to submit a ticket for further review of the issue with our QA team). Unfortunately, as with any bugs that arise, I am not able to provide a timeframe for if/when the matter will be resolved, but I will be certain to update this thread with any new information I receive!
Thanks Christie,
I'm just glad I was doing it right.
It appears that Selected states aren't the only thing that doesn't work in the Master Slide. Here is a link someone sent this past summer, and I am having the same issues now. When I changed the selected, hover, etc., states back to the basic format (in the Master Slide), some saved and others did not...so the project now has half the tabs showing orange when you hover and the other half showing white. I guess i have to reset all the states?
Here is the link from August; it appears this issue was not fixed yet.

Thanks,
Hi, Margaret -- I appreciate the follow-up and you are correct, there are other bugs with slide masters that are being looked into by our QA team. As I mentioned, I am not provided with a timeframe for resolution by our QA team but any updates I am given will be shared here with you. In the meantime, I am going to have to defer to the community to share any additional ideas they may have to assist, or you are welcome to reach out to our Support Engineers via this form, as well. :)
