Trimming Video Errors

Feb 07, 2017

I am trying to trim off the end of a video (MP4 format). I am in the edit video setting and I set the "Trim End" time to where I want it to stop. I click the Save & Close button but it seems that the trimmed video isn't saving into my project. When I preview my project the video is still the longer version. When in the Edit Video setting the total duration is listed as the full video, but the Trim End and Trim Duration times do show it's the time that I want.

Hey Karen!

Thanks for your question! What version of Storyline are you using? You'll want to be sure you're on the latest update of Storyline 2 here or Storyline 360 here

Also, are you working from your local hard drive? Working on a network drive or an external (USB) drive can cause erratic behavior due to latency, such as file corruption, an inability to save changes, and loss of resources.  I'd also look at importing your existing file into a new Storyline project to resolve any of the odd behavior.

If you're still seeing this problem, you'll want to share your file with our Support Engineers here for further testing. And please be sure to let me know your case number so I can follow along as well. :)

Hi Karen-

Thanks for posting about this issue as I was experiencing a similar problem.

My issue turned out to be user error, so I am sharing *just* in case it might be helpful for others.  I captured a screen recording within a Storyline 2 project and then attempted to use the "Edit Video" options to both Trim and Crop.  I made the necessary adjustments, taking care to "Save & Close" only to find the video clip at the original length and screen size.

My mistake was that I was clicking Crop a second time after making changes (same with Trim) expecting this to be a necessary action for the adjustments to "hold" - similar to how I usually use the Crop tool in Picture Tools within Storyline 2.  So, long story short, the lesson that I learned today is that clicking Crop for a second time in Picture Tools is no big deal (although unnecessary) but will undo adjustments made when in Video Tools > Edit Video (ditto for Trim).

I hope this saves someone a little time along the way!
