URGENT! Subtitle Blinking on a MP4 file
Feb 01, 2019
Hi,
I created a Storyline file which contains a video and added subtitle using Add Captions. Then, I published it as a MP4 video with SD resolution. The video duration is 06.41 minutes. The Storyline is also the latest updated one 3.24.17733
However, when I play the video through Windows Media Player, the sub title starts blinking / flickering very often that it is not possible to read the sub title at all.
I am attaching both the Storyline file as well as Mp4 file for your reference.
Please let me know how can this be resolved.

Hi iGTB!
Thanks for sharing the MP4 file – I can clearly see the blinking caption, and that definitely doesn't look good!
Let me connect you with our Support team so you can get help ASAP. I've opened a case on your behalf, and you'll hear back from us soon!
Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I also understand that a feature request has been created for the same. I am not sure why it is a feature request. The feature already exists, it is only that the feature is not functioning properly. I hope there is some technical fault in the feature.
Also, I did create one file before which was working fine. I am attaching the same for your reference. Not sure, what went wrong the next time. Any help regarding this would be greatly appreciated.
Hi iGTB Training!
Hmm, this is certainly a puzzle. Technically closed captions shouldn't appear when you publish Storyline 360 content to video, according to this article.
Can you confirm that you followed these steps to publish your content to a MP4 video file?
Hi,
Yes. I did the same. I am also attaching few more files. One created without trigger and another created with trigger. When it is created without trigger, the subtitle does not appear in mp4 output file. However, when it is created with trigger, the subtitle appears but blinks frequently.
I have attached the Storyline file, published mp4 file and the video of steps taken by me. All these files are attached for both "Without trigger" and "With trigger" scenarios.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am also parallely interacting with Customer Support team (Case #01682731).
Hope I get a quick resolution!
Thanks for confirming those steps, iGTB Training. Appreciate you sharing another example!
I'm going to attach this file in your case with my teammate, Robert. You should hear back from him shortly, and I'll also follow along as I'm curious to know what's causing this behavior!
Have you any updated regarding the Subtitle Blinking on a MP4 file?
I also got the same issues on my video file even those I'm using the latest Storyline 360 version.
Appreciate for your response.
Hi Yogesh!
Thanks for checking in! We are still seeing blinking with mp4 files and closed captioning. We are still tracking customer impact so we haven't released a fix yet.
However, we did find the culprit! Using a trigger to enable closed captioning on a video causes the captions to blink. If at all possible, we recommend not using a trigger to enable closed captioning.
In the meantime, if I hear of any workarounds, I'll make sure to share them in this discussion.
Thanks for your response.
Hi Lauren,
Is there another option to display closed captions when published to a video other than using the Player.ShowCaptions built-in variable? I didn't use a trigger; I simply set the variable default to true, but the CCs are still blinking/flashing. My goal is to publish to video with CCs turned on so they'll automatically display in Windows Media Player. Basically they'll be forced on without an option to turn off.
Thanks.
Hello JJ! I responded to your other post — let's continue there!
Hello,
Have there been any updates or solutions to this flickering issue? I'm experiencing the same problem when I trigger the captions to display when timeline starts. Captions appear in the exported video but with the distracting flickering. Have about a dozen videos that need to be exported.
Thanks
Hello Jeff and welcome to E-Learning Heroes. 😊
Thank you for reaching out and sharing what you are experiencing with your closed captions.
This is still an open issue with our team, so I do not have an update to share at this time, but I've attached this conversation as we continue to track user impact and so that we can share updates with you here.
We are experiencing the same here in Malaysia. Appreciate your workaround solution or solution itself. We are just publishing an MP4 video and utilising Storyline to create captions. The output is a video format. Even tested through Review 360, it is blinking. thanks.
Hello everyone,
I wanted to update this discussion to share that we no longer see this issue where closed captions are blinking in a published video when using the latest version of Storyline 360, Build 3.61.27106.0.
If you or others are experiencing any additional issues using the latest update, please contact our support team directly.
Hi Leslie,
I stilll see this flickering in the latest build
Hello Peter!
I see that you've shared your file with our Support Engineers, and they are seeing this bug still presents itself in your project. We've shared this with our Engineers for review. We'll keep you updated in this discussion.
Hello,
I also see the flickering captions in my today's project as well. Is there any solution or workaround to it? Please note that my goal is to keep the captions initially visible.
Thank you in advance for any update on this.
Hello Beata!
We still have this logged as a bug where the captions flicker when publishing a Storyline 360 course for video. This conversation is linked so we can update you when a fix is released.
Are there any updates to this? I have a customer needing 15 different languages published to mp4, and the video is nearly unusable with the captions flickering. I also have the captions initially visible.
Is it possible to get the Build 3.61.27106.0 as an installation file? (It is not available in the Other version history in the Articulate 360 list to install.)
HI Jannicke
you'd be better logging a case with support to request this
I have done that as well:-)
Hello Jannicke!
Great call opening a support case! I see you're working with my colleague Mcgem. You are in good hands!
We'll continue the conversation over in the support case.
Have a great day! ☺️
