Use one version of a question in the question bank

Jan 06, 2014

Hi all,

I have a question regarding the Storyline question bank. I have a lot of questions on different subjects. Some questions are actually different versions of the same question (so: same learning goal but different case or context).

I would like to be able to make a question bank with one version of the question, not all of them. It doesn't really matter which one.

Also, I'd like to be able to indicate that I have questions on a specific subject, and that the question bank should choose 4 out of 7 question for this part.

I've thought about creating different question banks for each type of question but this might be a bit too much work really.

Does anyone know how to do this? Of course I've reviewed the tutorials and searched on the forum, but I can't seem to find out how.

Thanks a lot!

Hi Marjolein,

Are you looking to set this up for the purposes of storing all your questions or they'll be used this way in one course? I'm not sure I'm following your set up, but you could organize questions by type say, and if the user only needs to answer one of those type have it draw one randomly. This would set it up so that users would receive different questions (within reason of course as it's randomly drawn for each person, so probability applies here). The same with setting it up based on different subjects, and they need to answer X questions out of Y possible questions, and you'd draw them randomly from the question banks.

If I'm misunderstanding, could you include a bit more information? Maybe an actual scenario or set of questions and how you'd like the user to interact with them?

Hi Ashley,

I'll try to explain a bit more, because I don't fully understand what you mean but I have a feeling we're probably talking about the same thing

What I want/would like are two things.

Thing 1: I have a question about a supply chain, in which students have to put the elements in the right order. I have one version which is about the supply chain of sugar (i.e. sugar plantation - refinery - harbour for shipment  - distribution center -supermarket - customer) and one about coffee. I would like storyline to be able to pick either version of the question. I don't know how.

Thing 2: I have several learning goals, for example:

- Be able to put elements of a supply chain in the right order

- Be able to recognize different types of warehouse

- Be able to name the pros and cons of types of warehouses

I would like to be able to have e.g. four questions for every learning goal/category. And the system will randomly pick 2 out of 4 per category for example. Is that possible and if yes, how?

I realize now that the first thing is probably a more specific version of what I want in 'thing 2'. In thing 2 it's also possible to have different questions about the same thing, but in thing 1 it's specifically different versions of the same question, so also the same type of question (drag & drop for example).

Does that help to clarify? If not please let me know :-)

I could share my questions with you of course, but as they are in dutch I'd have to translate them first, I hope this is enough clarification because this is faster.
