Using variables to create 'branching' training - issues in preview
Jan 25, 2016
Hello
I'm creating an online course where the course takes you on a different branch depending on whether you are based in Europe or the US.
I created a variable which changes to '1' or '2' (called UserPole) depending on whether you click an 'EMEA' button, or a 'USCAN' button.
Subsequent slides, or layers on slides show based on whether that variable was set to 1 or 2 by the button click.
Sometimes this works and sometimes it doesn't, and I cannot figure out why - the triggers seem to be set ok. In preview mode, some slides work as they should but others just will not progress - you see a flash of the next slide and then it returns to the one before.
If I upload the story file would someone be able to take a look for me? the transition from slide 1.2 to 1.3 works ok showing the layers it should. but then 1.3 to 1.4 will not work.
Many thanks!
Jo

Sure Jo, upload the file using the Add Attachment button in the post and someone will be sure to jump in and help if they can.
Brilliant, thanks Wendy - I've been bashing my head against a brick wall for hours! I bet it will be something really obvious! Great to have an expert look at it. Attached below.
Hi Jo
wow I was going insane but I think I have worked it out.
On your master slide layout you have a trigger, jump to previous slide when timeline starts which I think it throwing everything into chaos.
I've tested and it works how I think you want it to. Just go into the slide master layouts and remove those triggers.
Good luck
Thank goodness it wasn't just me! That's amazing, thank you. But can I ask one more daft question? Where do I find the Master layouts?
Thanks!
Jo
Hi Jo
go to View tab > Slide masters and you'll see all the layouts.
To see which layout a slide is using, highlight the slide in slide view and choose layout from the home tab then you'll see which one is applied.
It worked!!!
Wendy you are a genius. Thank you SO much!
All the best
Jo
Yay Jo! So glad you sorted it - good luck with your project.
