Using Variables to give points to individual multiple response ?
Sep 25, 2013
Hi everyone
I have an idea and I'm not sure it will work in Storyline--
I need to have a question where students can select an answer choice from two categories, and if the answer is correct in category one OR two, they receive one point, and if both answers are correct, they receive 2 points.
I keep thinking there must be a way to do this with variables, possibly if I set each correct answer point as a variable, and then tell storyline to count 1 point to the interaction if that variable is chosen? I get stuck at this point, because I'm not sure how to tell Storyline to do that...
any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Hi Daniela
It is possible using variables. Have a look at the attached .story file. I made a number variable with initial value 0.
On clicking submit, if the correct answers are selected, increase it by 1.

Awesome!! I knew this would be possible. I also need to have it in a larger test that has other questions (multiple choice), and have the score added to the final score in the result slide. Would I still be able to use this method?
For multiple choice, use checkboxes instead of radio buttons. I copied the radio buttons from the quiz template.
Passing this score of the custom quiz to the result slide is a bit tricky. I ll get back to you on this one.
Interested in doing this in the current lesson I'm creating. Wondering if anyone figured out what's needed to be able to pass this scoring onto the results slide? Would love any direction people have to give!
Hi Kristi,
This thread is a bit older, so I'm not certain that any folks are still subscribed or able to share their ideas here but the results slide variables aren't accessible within Storyline, so you'll want to look at using some custom Javascript in regards to passing variables, and to get started you want to review the information here in regards to Best Practices with Javascript.
