On my current project, when I add a variable reference text box so I can review the variable values as my slides and layers progress, it stops the preview of the layer or slide from working. The preview either just stops and doesn't show the layer with the reference box, or i get a greyed out screen over the preview with 3 dots timer. When i delete the text box, it starts working again!
Sorry to hear your variable reference text box isn't working! A few questions to dig deeper:
Does this happen in preview only, or when you publish as well?
What kind of font are you using? Can you switch to another font to see if it works?
What language are you using?

I switched fonts to arial, once I had loaded the text box with the reference and that seems to solve the issue.
I've been using my corporate font without issues previously on other projects, so i think it may be just this project for some reason. I'll copy slides into a new project and see what happens.
I'm having this exact same issue. It happened after updating to v3.40.2220.80 a few weeks ago. I have a case 02295571 open with a file shared. I also had internal fonts for the reference text box and changed it to Arial, then the preview worked. Is this a one off issue or a bug in a new release?

I have the same issue. The slide worked before, but now it doesn't load anymore when I have reference variables on the slide.
I tried changing fonts to Arial, removing all text formatting, inserting variable references in new text boxes and so on... Nothing seems to work.
