video has no play button when first loaded in iOS

Nov 11, 2015

Hi there,

I'm fairly new to Storyline, and I'm trying to debug an issue.

If I publish my project with HTML5 enabled (Mobile Player disabled), then view the project on an iPad (running iOS 9.1), it all works well except for when I get to a slide with an embedded video (it's an mp4, if that helps).

The video loads, but there's no play controls visible when the page first loads. I just see a completely black box in the screen. If I tap into the black box, the video starts playing and the controls appear. But I'm concerned about users who don't know that there's supposed to be a video there and don't think to tap into the black box.

On my desk top computer, the same slide loads with the play controls showing straight away.

What am I missing?

Hi Christie,

Thanks for your reply.

I'm attaching a cut down version of the project with only a single slide in it (too big to upload otherwise). I've tested the file by uploading a published version to our LMS (Moodle 2.6.11), and it still has the same issue.

Looking forward to seeing what you make of it.

Cheers,

Lucien.

Hi Lucien,

Thanks for sharing your file here. I took a look and you'll see that once you do click the play in the iPad the controls are different than if you were viewing the Flash output on your desktop, and those are the iPad specific controls which get included. Unfortunately there isn't a way around this, as you'll see in another sample I set up here  My video is set to play automatically vs. yours set to play when clicked, so perhaps that is the adjustment you'd need to make to have your videos play to the user upon visiting the slide?

Ok. I can accept that.

One work around I considered was to place a button control right in the middle of the video player screen.

This worked, but I could only get the button to disappear if you click on the actual button itself (using a trigger on the button). If you click anywhere else, the button remains in the middle of the screen right on top of the playing video.

How can I access the triggers of the video itself so I can make the button disappear when the video starts playing instead of when the button is pressed?

Thanks.

Hi Lucien,

There aren't video triggers to access - perhaps you could look at setting the play button to disappear after a few seconds presuming that the user had clicked on it to start by then or clicked on the video?

Hopefully others in the community will be able to chime in with ideas or solutions if they've run into a similar set up.
