Video on Slide Layers

Oct 06, 2017

I have a slide in Articulate Storyline 2 that has multiple layers. I want to add a button to each layer that says "Click here for a review". When the learner clicks the button a video should play. When the video finishes, I want it to essentially be hidden and allow the learner to go back to the layer they were on. I want this same interaction to be available on all my layers meaning the button will play the video and take the learner back to the layer they were on when the video is complete.

I've tried to do this a few ways and I keep running into issues. I tried to add the video to a layer and have the button trigger to open the layer and close it when the video is finished but doing it this way always takes me back to my main slide and not the layer I was on.

I also tried to insert my video but make it hidden on each layer until the learner clicked the button which would then make it play and then it would hide when finished but I can't figure out how to change the state of a video on a slide to hidden until X happens.

What's the best way to do this? Is it possible? Is there a setting I need to change?

Thank you so much!

Hi Madeline,

have you tried a show layer trigger when media completes as well as the hide layer trigger - that may work

So you would have the hide layer xx when media completes on video then a show layer yy (layer the user came from with the button click) when media completes.

I tried all sorts of combinations and still don't have it exactly how I want it. I was able to create a new slide and place my video on the slide and I have a button on my original simulation slide and each layer that says click here for a review. When the learner clicks, it takes them to the slide with the review video and when it completes it takes them back to my simulation.

My problem is that my simulation is essentially a video I've split and added hotspots so on each layer the learner has to click a hotspot and when they click the media plays and they advance to the next layer. When I set the original simulation slide to "resume saved state", the hotspots don't work and the learner is stuck on the layer even when they click where the hotspot should be.

Because of this, if they watch the review video, they have to start from the beginning of the simulation when they return. Any idea why a hotspot wouldn't work once they return to the slide layer they were on when they clicked the review button?

**I would share my file but unfortunately I'm not able to share the video content as it's proprietary.

Two thoughts:

As I read your first post, I'm not clear about exactly what you want, but I know you are exactly describing the function of a lightbox slide. Have you tried lightboxing the review video?

If that doesn't work, attach your .story file here. Don't worry about the video, nobody needs it to trouble shoot your story. Just do a Replay video of anything and put it in place of the real one. Someone can look at it and I bet you'll find an answer.
