Video Player(s)

Jul 27, 2015

Hello, I am evaluating authoring tools for my organization, one of which is Storyline.  I was advised to find out the player or players that Storyline uses to play video - does anyone know?  It might've been my oversight, but I wasn't able to find the answer to this question on the Articulate Storyline website.  Thank you.

Hello Michael,
Thank you for your reply, but I was trying to identify the name of the specific video player or players that Storyline uses as opposed to learning how to use the video player's features.
I am using the e-learning authoring checklist included in the book titled "E-Learning Fundamentals - A Practical Guide" written by Diane Elkins and Desiree Pinder to help me compare each authoring tool and to help me make a decision as to which one to purchase. A criteria in the checklist is "Player(s) used to play video". I wasn't sure I was understanding this correctly so in addition to posting my question to this community, I also emailed Diane Elkins, who sent me the following response:
"Knowing about the player relates to what the end-user needs to play the course. For example, if all video is converted to Flash by the authoring tool, then the learner needs the Flash player. Several years ago, some tools even had proprietary players that the learners wouldn't already have and would need to download just to play the course. That is less and less common. What's more common these days is for the tool to take any number of video types and convert it to a standard type upon publish. That's what Storyline does. It will convert your video to Flash. And if you publish using the HTML5 settings, it will also publish the video to mp4. Most users will either have Flash or an HTML5-compatible browser, so they aren't likely to need any special players or plug-ins."
Sorry for not acknowledging your reply sooner Michael - I was unexpectedly out of commission for the last couple of days. Thanks again.
