When importing a translated XLIFF file, an error happens and only one scene gets translated

When I import my Spanish XLIFF file into Storyline, I do not get the congratulations screen, instead I get the Articulate Storyline Error Report screen and then an Importing Translation window, which doesn't change or go away. I have to cancel it. When I cancel, the first scene is translated; however, none of the other screens are translated. 

Do I need to put everything in one scene? Can Storyline only translate one scene?

Hello Nicki,

These types of issues can be really tricky to solve as it's usually a malformed XLF file that causes the issue you're seeing in Storyline. 

Somewhere after the first scene is likely where the problem is and that's where it gets to be challenging.

A few things you can do:

  • Go back to the translator and ask them to check the slides after Scene 1.  You might want to supply them some of the text on the first slide in the second scene so they can find the error faster.
  • Wait for the Storyline forum moderators to respond. I've seen them request XLF files to see if they can figure out where the problem is.
  • You can try troubleshooting the problem yourself.  If you take the XLF file and change the extension to XML you can then drag and drop it into your browser.  This will make the file much easier to read than trying to do it in a text editor such as Notepad.  You'll want to check the tags to see if they match in presentation for Source and Target.  You'll find the error(s) in the Target tags which is where your translation is located.

It's a needle in a haystack - the error(s) are usually very subtle.  I hope one of these ideas will get you closer to solving your problem!

I tried putting everything in one scene and taking some text out of slide master and putting it on my slide, since it appeared that this was the last thing Storyline did was translate some text on slide master. I still a only getting the first three slides.
I cannot figure out what went wrong in the XML file I created.
How quickly can I get the Storyline forum moderators to respond? I am on a tight schedule and I don't want to have to do this all manually (copy over the translated text on my own).

Ok, knowing now that the error(s) are most likely on slide 3 or 4, this is where you will want to start looking.  You're going to be looking for tags in the <target> sections that are closed early or don't quite match the <source> sections.

If you're doing the XLIFF file by hand (using Notepad for example), you can find slide 3 (or slide 4) by searching for unique text so you can search for it faster.

Now it's looking line by line to see if the <source> structure matches the <target> structure.  Look to see if any extra tags got added by accident.

As for when the Storyline forum moderators will respond, don't quote me on this, but I recall they were going to be out on vacation?  I can't remember though if it was this week or last...

FYI - I did write an application that creates properly formatted XLIFF files and uses Amazon Translate to provide the translation.  Unfortunately, I can't tell you the name of the application because it's against forum rules ('self-promotion').  I have some additional thoughts on how I could help but we would have to do that through private messaging / Linked In.
