Are you seeing this happen only with that one file in particular or is this happening with any .story file that you try to edit in Storyline? Importing your slides into a new file may fix this if the former is the issue or you may need to repair your software to fix erratic behavior if the latter.

Close the file (I would not save) reopen (you may need to reboot). It is possible the file is corrupted, in that case restore from a backup.
