Youtube Embedded video not appearing (Storyline 2)
Jan 27, 2016
Hi,
I embedded a youtube video (using the web objects option) into a new course and it doesn't seem to be working consistently. The Articulate file is saved on my C drive. When I do a publish and test on the web it works. When I upload it to the LMS and run, there are issues.
In IE11, it gives the message "Only secure content is displayed" and "Show all content" at the bottom of the screen. When I click "Show all Content" it reloads the course from the start and the video works. In Firefox 44 there is just a blank screen where the video should run.
Does anyone know how I can get it to work consistently on both browsers, without changing the browser settings for all employees?
The youtube video is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcLDkdw4TT0
Thanks for any help you can offer!
Cindy

Hi Cindy,
Different browsers may have different behaviors with web content such as that, and it also sounds like your LMS is playing a role in that since the regular web publish works fine. You'll want to check with your LMS team to see if there are specific settings you should use or change to allow it to display that content.
Hi Ashley, thanks for the info.
I'll check with the LMS team and let you know what happens
The LMS support agrees, it might be an LMS issue. They've created a work order to 'look into it'. They said it also may be this for IE https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2625928
LMS support for this type of thing can take a long , looooong time to get back. In the meantime, is there any other way a youtube video can be embedded in the online course that might work?
Thanks
Thanks Cindy for that update - if the LMS is blocking it or it's the browser, I'm not sure of another way to handle it within Storyline. Perhaps there is someone in the community who would be able to share some additional ideas here.
I removed the video and tried inserting a hyperlink. That also isn't working. I added it in Storyline using the Insert Hyperlink option. When I test the url in the Trigger Wizard it says 'Invalid URL or file not found'. And when published as a test to the web or through the LMS, the url opens a new blank screen.
However, when I add that link straight to a browser page, it opens without any problems. URL used: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcLDkdw4TT0
The URL isn't part of a bullet and there isn't any animation around it. Any ideas why it wouldn't work?
Thanks.
This works for me. Here is a quick test with two variations of your URL, inserted as a textblock with Hyperlink: http://dev.keypointlearn.com/xcl73_SL2/YouTubeHL/V1/story.html
Hi Michael, the two links work for me on your test.
I followed your example, created a textblock and inserted the hyperlink. When I did a LMS publish and then 'view project' the url opened a new blank screen and the video didn't show.
How did you add them? Thanks
see attached my testfile
Hi Cindy,
If you're using the "view project" button it sounds like you're still viewing the published content locally which could cause elements such as hyperlinks or webobjects to not work as expected. You may want to look at uploading to your LMS and testing there. You could also use a site such as SCORM Cloud which is an industry standard for testing LMS output.
Hi Michael. I did the following to add the hyperlinks: Insert - Text box, then Insert - Hyperlink. I used the link from your testfile and added it to the 'Link Text' field. Then Action = Jump to URL/file. When = User clicks. I did this for both links you added to the testfile
Hi Ashley. I did upload it to the LMS and test. They all loaded a new tab. The tab was blank each time.
For now, I'll remove the video/url completely as the course is mandatory and needs to be put into production soon. Hopefully we'll figure it out and can add it back in later. Thanks for your help and suggestions.
Hi Cindy,
Did you test the same course in SCORM Cloud as I mentioned? If it worked there, you may want to share those results with your LMS team as that would indicate something that may need to change within the LMS.
If it also didn't work at SCORM Cloud, we're happy to take a look at the file too. You can share it here using the "Add attachment" functionality or sending it along to our Support engineers here.
Hi
I have an issue with launching youtube videos as web objects.
It works fine when published to the the web, however doens't work when published to the LMS. The SCROM clound doens't work either.
Attached is the file.
Looking for a workaround, thanks.
Hi Lal,
I'm sorry about the difficulty you've had with this. YouTube videos can go missing from published courses if your LMS is using secure https and your videos are using standard http. The good news is it's easy to fix. See this article for details.
Thank you, Ashley, that worked. Changing it from HTTP to HTTPS worked.
Yes! Thanks for that update Lal!
Just encountered this issue and changing to https worked too! Thank you!
Great news Kathleen!
Love seeing when the older conversations are still helping folks out :) I appreciate you chiming in to share.
