YouTube vid inserted as web object still not working on iPad

Oct 10, 2013

Hi, I know this has been asked before, but it is a real problem.

I inserted a YouTube video (not restricted) as a web object, published as HTML 5, but it's still not working on the iPad. It works great on Mac and Windows.

When the story opens, it seems like the video is going to work, (the video appears on screen, the play button is clickable, and the progress bar under the video shows like it's loading) but the video never actually plays.

Any idea what I could be doing wrong?

Thanks!

Hi Leslie,

I've tested it out on two different iPads and 2 different iPhones. Usually it works, and sometimes it doesn't. For example, today I tested out another project, for which I used the same template as the link I pasted above (just changing the YouTube IDs), and on one iPad one of three videos that are embedded in the project refuses to load and I get an error message saying "Video unavailable," yet it plays fine on a PC and Mac. The other videos in the story also work fine on the iPad.

However, my question is this: how come after publishing both stories the same way (checking off Include HTML 5 output, Use Articulate Mobile Player on iPad, and Allow downloading for offline viewing), one story opens perfectly in the Safari browser on the iPad, yet the other story prompts to download Articulate Mobile Player. I subsequently went in and unchecked "Use Articulate Mobile Player on iPad," republished, and it now plays in the browser like I want it to. Just wondering why one would do this and the other wouldn't when both stories were published in the same way.

Hi Alexandra! I'm not sure that there is a simple answer to your question. That could depend on the iOS version that was running. What 'should' happen if you're checking 'Use Articulate Mobile Player on iPad' is:

  • they'll see a launch page that allows them to view the course in the iPad app. (And if they don't have the app installed on their iPad yet, they'll see an option to install it.)
If they're using an iPad and you didn'tchoose the Articulate Mobile Player option when you published, but youdid choose HTML5, they'll see the HTML5 output in mobile Safari.
