Adding Tickbox to PDF documents to confirm something has been read and understood

Aug 20, 2021

Hello everyone,

Is there a function on one of Articulate's apps to have the ability to add a tick box on PDF documents so that individuals can say that they have read and agreed to the document? These documents will be going onto an LMS system.

Thank you in advance,

Chloe

Hi, Chloe,

Check with the LMS folks. They may be able to enter a PDF as a "Read and Acknowledge" that requires the user to digitally indicate their agreement to the document. I've seen this implemented, so it at least some LMS's have this functionality. However, I'm not an LMS expert, so I don't have any other info to share about that method.

Storyline doesn't have any built-in functionality for letting users edit a PDF. (JavaScript might work, but I can't help with that, either.)

I have sometimes includes an Acknowledgement slide at the end of a course. It's basically a T/F slide. It asks if the user understands the content. They can answer Yes or No, and there is a Results slide. If they answer Yes, the Success layer congratulates them for completing the course. If they answer No, the Failure layer suggests how to review the content. It also provides a button for answering the Acknowledgement statement again. When that Results slide is used to track completion of the course, that basically means anyone who passes has acknowledged the content.

You could link to the PDF from Storyline, and then ask users to acknowledge it. Or you could put the PDF content into the course.

Of course, no matter what tracking method is used, there's no real way to ensure that the user actually read the material. But the methods would meet basic compliance requirements.

Hi Chloe,

In our company I'm the LMS Admin and I also do course development in Rise.

If I was asked to implement what you are describing in our organization, we would not use Rise at all. We would only use our LMS because of the functionality it offers. Our LMS allows documents, videos, web sites, etc., all to be attached to a course. Rules need to be set up to determine which of these items are optional, and which ones needed to be completed to get credit for the Rise course.

Here is what we would do:

  1. Turn the PDF into a fillable form that would allow learners to check boxes.
  2. Attach the PDF in the LMS as an assignment related to the Rise course.
  3. Learners would need to download the PDF from the LMS, complete it, and then upload it back to the LMS as a completed assignment where it would be received by the Course instructor.

I mention this to possibly help you to generate some ideas.

That being said, none of this may work for you because of how your LMS works.

As suggested by Judy, talk to your LMS Admin to find out what is possible.

Hi chloe,

I faced the similar situation and i set it up in our lms.

Since all was required that employees tick or click on yes or no that they have understood. I used the existing survey functionality in our lms. In the question text, wrote the entire code of conduct text and in options, yes and no. Since, in survey, there is no right or wrong, got the responses in reports..
