You can hide the base via selecting that option in the Slide Layer Properties.
If you want to hide only some items on the base layer, the easiest way to do that is by putting a filled shape on the layer that covers the items you want to hide. The fill can be any color, so you could have it blend with the background color of the base or be a different color so it stands out.
